Abstract:
A functional block for assembly includes at least one element and a magnetic film attached to the element and having a magnetic remanence (M/M) of less than about 0.2, having a coercive field (H) of less than about 100 Oersteds (100 Oe) and having a permeability (μ) of greater than about two (2). At least one element is selected from the group consisting of a semiconductor device, a passive element, a photonic bandgap element, a luminescent material, a sensor, a micro-electrical mechanical system (MEMS), an energy harvesting device and combinations thereof. An article for assembly includes a substrate and a patterned magnetic film disposed on the substrate and defining at least one receptor site. The patterned magnetic film is magnetized primarily in a longitudinal direction and is characterized by a BH product of greater than about 1 megaGauss Oe.

Abstract:
An apparatus, such as a plasma generation system, is provided. The apparatus can include a chamber that may be formed, for example, substantially of insulating material. The chamber can be configured to establish therein a stable glow discharge plasma having a pressure of at least about atmospheric pressure while vibrating a sample so as to be milled by bodies contained by the chamber. For example, the chamber may vibrate and/or rotate, and the chamber can include at least one body that includes insulating material and is free within the chamber. Provided is a method that includes providing a granular first material (e.g., a magnetocaloric material) and a sinterable second material. The granular first material and the sinterable second material can be combined to form an aggregate. Once the aggregate has been formed, localized sintering of the aggregate can be performed, for example, such that, subsequent to localized sintering, the second material is substantially contiguous and binds the granular first material. A method of making a soft magnetic material with fine grain structure is provided. The method includes the steps of providing a soft magnetic starting material; heating the soft magnetic starting material to a temperature at which the material has a microstructure comprising at least two solid phases; and deforming the soft magnetic starting material. An amorphous metal alloy having high tensile strength and high electrical resistivity is provided. The amorphous metal alloy has the following chemical composition, in atomic percent: (CoFe)CrTX, where, T is at least one element selected from the group consisting of Mn, Mo, and V; X is at least one element selected from the group consisting of B, Si and P, and a, b, c and d satisfy the formulas of: 0≦a≦100, 4≦b≦25, 0≦c≦40, 15≦d≦35, respectively. Abstract:
An etchant for and method of removing a glass coating on a metallic wire is provided. The etchant comprises an acid solution having metal ions contained therein. The metal ions prevent the acid solution from pitting or damaging the metallic wire, while allowing the acid solution to effectively etch and remove the glass coating. In one embodiment, a fluorine-based acid solution can be used. In another embodiment, a glass coated, metal alloy microwire is etched and the metal ions added to the etchant are chosen to be the same as the majority constituent element in the metal alloy. The glass coating can be either removed in full or only partially removed.
