Systems And Methods For Determining Deflection Of A Wind Turbine Shaft

US Patent:
2011024, Oct 6, 2011
Filed:
Dec 14, 2010
Appl. No.:
12/967319
Inventors:
Eric David Eggleston - Tehachapi CA, US
International Classification:
F03D 7/00, G01B 11/16
US Classification:
416 1, 416120, 356622
Abstract:
A system and a method for measuring deflection of a shaft in a wind turbine and adjusting a pitch angle of a rotor blade in the wind turbine based on the determined deflection are described. The system includes an emitter, a receiver, and a controller. The emitter is positioned adjacent a first portion of the shaft and is configured to emit photons. The receiver is positioned adjacent a second portion of the shaft and is configured to receive photons emitted from the emitter and determine a location on the receiver where the photons strike the receiver. The controller is communicatively coupled to the receiver and is configured to determine deflection of the shaft based on the location on the receiver where the photons strike the receiver. The controller is also configured to adjust the pitch angle of the rotor blade based on the determined deflection of the shaft to reduce deflection of the shaft.

Wind Turbine Geothermal Heating And Cooling System

US Patent:
2009009, Apr 16, 2009
Filed:
Oct 12, 2007
Appl. No.:
11/871196
Inventors:
Eric D. Eggleston - Tehachapi CA, US
International Classification:
F24J 3/08, F01P 5/00, F03D 9/00
US Classification:
606412, 290 55
Abstract:
A wind turbine having a tower and a nacelle, includes at least one unit to be heated or cooled. The unit can be housed within the tower or nacelle. A geothermal heat exchanger can be located inside the tower or nacelle. A geothermal cooling circuit provides flow communication between the unit to be heated or cooled and the heat exchanger, and contains a thermal transfer medium flowing between the unit and the heat exchanger for facilitating heating or cooling of the unit.

Wind Turbine Noise Controls

US Patent:
2010013, Jun 3, 2010
Filed:
Feb 10, 2009
Appl. No.:
12/368429
Inventors:
Eric Eggleston - Tehachapi CA, US
Assignee:
GENERAL ELECTRIC COMPANY - Schenectady NY
International Classification:
F03D 7/00
US Classification:
416 36, 416 1, 416 31
Abstract:
A method and system for providing noise control for a wind turbine system are disclosed. The method can include providing a wind turbine system comprising at least one blade operably mounted on the wind turbine and a controller, determining an external condition with at least one sensor, receiving a noise control signal related to the external condition, and adjusting an operating parameter in response to receiving the noise control signal related to the external condition.

Wind Energy System Having An Insect Sensor

US Patent:
2009014, Jun 4, 2009
Filed:
Nov 30, 2007
Appl. No.:
11/947865
Inventors:
ERIC EGGLESTON - Tehachapi CA, US
International Classification:
H02P 9/00, G08B 23/00
US Classification:
3405731, 290 44
Abstract:
The invention relates to wind energy systems. A wind energy system is provided having an insect sensor. The insect sensor is adapted for measuring the insect density in the air. Further, a method for operating a wind energy system taking into account the insect density in the air is provided. The wind energy system is curtailed during times with a high insect density. Hence, in periods following times with a high insect density, the wind energy system can be operated without the aero-dynamical performance of the rotor blades being spoiled by smashed insects.
