Philosophy:
My Approach: I believe the therapeutic process is both cooperative and collaborative. Because I see the client as the expert, I identify and develop the treatment goals in collaboration with him/her. My goal is to help each client identify and mobilize his/her own resources to create valued life changes while also providing resources, developing specific skills and knowledge to help him/her along the way. Throughout this process, I respect each individual's natural ambivalence abut change and allow the client to set the pace and direction of treatment. Although I am eclectic in my approach, I rely heavily on the following therapeutic approaches:
Acceptance & Commitment Therapy (ACT), which focuses on helping you develop specific skills to use in changing behavioral patterns so as to more actively pursue a full and meaningful life.
Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy (CBT), which focuses on thought patterns, perceptions of events/self/others, emotions linked up to those thoughts/perceptions, and, finally, resulting behaviors.
Gottman Method (GM) Couples/Marital Therapy, which involves coaching clients through increasing behaviors that strengthen, and minimizing specific behaviors that are destructive to, couples relationships. These skills also tend to improve relationships with family, friends, coworkers, etc. For more information, see my Couples Therapy Contract.
Family Systems Therapy (FST), which focuses on patterns and communication styles present in current and past relationships, and the functioning of the family system as a whole, even when other family members are not participating in the treatment.
