Fixture For Attaching Guideways To A Machine Tool Base

Fixture For Attaching Guideways To A Machine Tool Base

US Patent:
4726103, Feb 23, 1988
Filed:
Aug 18, 1986
Appl. No.:
6/897234
Inventors:
Edwin L. Knight - Ware MA
William S. Shea - Clinton MA
Assignee:
The Warner & Swasey Company - Cleveland OH
International Classification:
B25B 2714
US Classification:
292815
Abstract:
A fixture (50) is used to precisely locate the horizontal (20, 30) and vertical (10) guideways on the bed (40) of a grinding machine. After locating the guideways (10, 20, 30), a bonding material (70) is placed in the spaces (1, 2, 3) between the guideways (10, 20, 30) and grinding machine bed (40). After the fixture (50) is removed, bolts (80) are tightened to apply a compressive force on the bonding material (70) located between the vertical guideway (10) and the machine tool bed (40).

Apparatus For Grinding A Workpiece

Apparatus For Grinding A Workpiece

US Patent:
4831782, May 23, 1989
Filed:
Nov 4, 1986
Appl. No.:
6/927259
Inventors:
Arthur H. Clough - Barre MA
Edwin L. Knight - Ware MA
Joseph A. Borbone - Paxton MA
Assignee:
The Pratt & Whitney Co., Inc. - West Hartford CT
International Classification:
B23B 2300
US Classification:
51 48R
Abstract:
An improved grinding apparatus includes a base (100) upon which a headstock (20) is mounted. A carriage (500) is movable along ways (101, 102) disposed on the base. A wheel slide (63) on the carriage rotatably support a grinding wheel (71). A first mounting plate (80) extends beneath a first footstock (400) and a first set of steadyrests (300) to a location adjacent to a headstock (20). While a workpiece is being ground, a second set of steadyrests (300) and a second footstock (400) are mounted on a second mounting plate (80). When the grinding operation has been completed, the first mounting plate is disconnected from the base (100) and removed from the grinding apparatus with the first set of steadyrests (300) and footstock (400). The second mounting plate (80) with the second set of steadyrests (300) and footstock (400) accurately positioned thereon are then inserted into the grinding apparatus.

Assignee:
The Warner & Swasey Company - Worchester MA
International Classification:
B24B 504
US Classification:
51105R
Abstract:
An improved apparatus for grinding a workpiece (W) includes a base (10) upon which a headstock (21) and a tailstock (23) are mounted to support a workpiece for rotation about axis (A). A carriage (300) is movable along the base. A light weight wheel slide (400) is mounted on the carriage and is movable toward and away from the workpiece. A grinding wheel (501) is rotatably supported on the wheel slide. In order to provide a solid support for the light weight wheel slide, the carriage has a plurality of guideways (901, 902, 903) which are enclosed by the carriage. The carriage extends throughout the length of the guideways and provides a solid support for the guideways.
