Book Binding Connector And Binding-Debinding Tool

US Patent:
4893836, Jan 16, 1990
Filed:
Mar 17, 1988
Appl. No.:
7/169558
Inventors:
Charles T. Groswith - Los Altos CA
Edwin A. Seipp III - Menlo Park CA
Thomas P. Myers - Cleveland Heights OH
Assignee:
Taurus Holdings, Inc. - Mountain View CA
International Classification:
B42B 508
US Classification:
281 28
Abstract:
A binding member having a pair of spaced ratcheted-surfaced posts which includes a bifurcated rim separated by an open groove, and extending from a binding member head. The binding member head is insertible into a counterbore in a paper sheets stack binding strip, the strip having an aperture through which the binding member posts are inserted. The rim includes a beveled ridge which passes through the strip aperture and snap locks into an exit portion of the aperture on a side of the strip opposite the counterbore. A finger-operated flat push disc binding/debinding tool is utilized to push and ratchet a pawl-containing locking collar on the posts and into a strip counterbore to clamp a paper sheets stack. An edge of the disc is insertible between the posts for breaking off excess length of a post extending from the strip and locking collar. The disc also contains a bifurcated bit for shearing from the posts.

Paper Sheets Binding System

US Patent:
4874186, Oct 17, 1989
Filed:
Nov 13, 1987
Appl. No.:
7/120069
Inventors:
Charles T. Groswith III - Los Altos CA
Edwin A. Seipp III - Menlo Park CA
Rickson Sun - Palo Alto CA
James R. Yurchenco - Palo Alto CA
Assignee:
Taurus Holdings, Inc. - Mountain View CA
International Classification:
B42D 100, B42F 1330, B42F 300, F16B 3504
US Classification:
281 28
Abstract:
A paper sheets binding system utilizes a two-part connector including a headed bifurcated inner ratcheted post binding member and a headed pawls-containing locking collar which is ratcheted down over the post member legs to cinch the heads either directly around punch-hole apertures in a paper sheets stack or against a pair of longitudinal binding strips on opposite marginal edges of the stack, with or without an affixed paper sheets cover. The post legs and pawls on the binding member and locking collar, respectively, are offset from the center of their heads so that upon assembly on a paper sheets stack to be bound, the connector element heads are asymmetric with respect to the apertures in the punch-hole paper stack. This allows the connector to better withstand asymmetric loading which is present when a book is purposely opened or accidentally dropped. The post legs contain an outer flat longitudinal section which minimizes their central thickness and allows for a cleaner, more accurate frangible breaking off of excess post leg lengths to accommodate various binding thicknesses.

Inclinometer With Rail Having A Hollow I-Shaped Cross-Section

US Patent:
5134780, Aug 4, 1992
Filed:
May 20, 1991
Appl. No.:
7/702745
Inventors:
Andrew G. Butler - Palo Alto CA
Edwin A. Seipp - Menlo Park CA
Kevin J. Reeder - Columbus OH
Blake R. Wharton - Menlo Park CA
Brian J. Bayley - Palo Alto CA
Jay Wilson - Portola Valley CA
Assignee:
Wedge Innovations, Inc. - San Jose CA
International Classification:
G01C 900
US Classification:
33366
Abstract:
An inclinometer 20 includes a module 22 which is mounted to a rail 32. The rail 32 has a hollow I-shaped cross-section which affords substantial resistance to torsional and bending loads about the longitudinal axis 34 of the inclinometer 20. The rail 32 and in particular a first end 36 of the I-shaped cross-section includes first and second curves 48, 50 which define lobes which provide a rail design more suitable for gripping and placement by the user.

Prong And Tang Binding System

US Patent:
4887925, Dec 19, 1989
Filed:
Aug 26, 1988
Appl. No.:
7/237016
Inventors:
Charles T. Groswith - Los Altos CA
Edwin A. Seipp - Menlo Park CA
Assignee:
Taurus Holdings, Inc. - Mountain View CA
International Classification:
B42F 1308
US Classification:
402 15
Abstract:
A prong or tang-type paper sheets binding system includes a cover marginal edge on which or over which the connector base and the prongs or tangs are abutted or bent with respect to the edge. An integral imperforate edge extension is provided which is foldable over the bent prongs and any keeper and foldable over the prong base or head to cover the exposed unattractive metal components of the connector including the prongs or tangs. In a preferred embodiment a second integral edge extension which contains a slot sized to encompass the bent prongs and a keeper if employed, or the prong base is foldable over the imperforate extension so that a planar smooth-finished surface of the imperforate extension covers the otherwise exposed metal components of the connector.
