Mar 24, 2009
Appl. No.:
12/409584
Inventors:
Edward T. Laird - Lombard IL, US
Assignee:
The Chamberlain Group, Inc. - Elmhurst IL
International Classification:
B60R 25/00
US Classification:
340 57, 340 571, 34042615, 116 2, 116 6, 116 8, 49 30, 49 31, 49357, 49358
Abstract:
A movable barrier system with a moving-barrier imminent motion notification includes a movable barrier and a movable barrier operator connected to control movement of the movable barrier between a first position and a second position. To reduce user dissatisfaction with the moving-barrier imminent motion notification, communications to the movable barrier operator include information to assist the operator in determining whether to operate the moving-barrier imminent motion notification in combination with moving the door or to specifically command that the moving-barrier imminent motion notification operate or not. The communication may include a signal or input separate from and in addition to a typical command signal or input to the operator. By other approaches, the method of communication can provide information to the operator with respect to operation of the moving-barrier imminent motion notification, or a transmitter identifier can provide information with respect to operation of the moving-barrier imminent motion notification.

US Patent:
6989767, Jan 24, 2006
Filed:
May 29, 2003
Appl. No.:
10/447662
Inventors:
James J. Fitzgibbon - Batavia IL, US
Edward Laird - Lombard IL, US
Assignee:
The Chamberlain Group, Inc. - Elmhurst IL
International Classification:
G08G 1/095
US Classification:
340908, 3406861, 340665, 340668
Abstract:
A movable barrier operator () can have at least two automatic modes of operation. These modes of operation can differ from one another at least with respect to their respective utilized maximum-applied-force thresholds, such that one of the modes of operation correlates to a reduced maximum-applied-force threshold. Selection between these available maximum-applied-force thresholds can be based, at least in part, upon whether an obstacle detector is operably coupled to the movable barrier operator. In one embodiment, a primary controller () and a secondary controller () can be utilized to effect the controlled selection and usage of the available maximum-applied-force thresholds. In another embodiment, maximum permitted speed of travel for the movable barrier can also be determined, at least in part, as a function of whether an obstacle detector is available to the movable barrier operator.

Abstract:
A system for controlling operation of a plurality of movable barrier operators includes a controller configured to communicate with a plurality of movable barrier operators. The controller is programmed to receive a command to operate the plurality of movable barrier operators and to send a signal to start operation of a first movable barrier operator of the plurality of movable barrier operators in response to receiving the command. The controller is also programmed to send a signal to start a second movable barrier operator of the plurality of movable barrier operators at a time after sending the signal to start the operation of the first movable barrier operator. An arbitration of confirmation signals from the plurality of movable barrier operators may be used to determine the order of operation of the movable barrier operators.

Hands-Free Barrier Operator

US Patent:
2013014, Jun 13, 2013
Filed:
Dec 7, 2011
Appl. No.:
13/313091
Inventors:
Edward T. LAIRD - Lombard IL, US
Robert John OLMSTED - Wood Dale IL, US
James J. ROBERTS - Burr Ridge IL, US
Assignee:
THE CHAMBERLAIN GROUP, INC. - Elmhurst IL
International Classification:
E05F 15/20
US Classification:
49 31, 49506
Abstract:
A barrier control apparatus and method for controlling movement of a barrier are provided to allow a user the ability to move a barrier without physically contacting the barrier. For example, the barrier control apparatus maintains a defined distance between an object such as a hand and a defined location relative to the barrier such that movement of the barrier follows movement of the object. In this way, a user is able to maintain control of the movement of the barrier throughout the opening and closing process. The barrier control apparatus is further able to detect gestures made by the user and can control movement of the barrier accordingly.

Filed:
Apr 25, 2003
Appl. No.:
10/423765
Inventors:
James J. Fitzgibbon - Batavia IL, US
Edward Laird - Lombard IL, US
Assignee:
The Chamberlain Group, Inc. - Elmhurst IL
International Classification:
H02P 1/00

Abstract:
A controlled torque drive for a motor of a barrier operator including a current sensor coupled to a current conducting path that is in series with the motor. The current sensor is configured to sense the current level in the current conducting path and provide a signal indicative of the current level in the current conducting path to a current controller that restricts the current level to the motor when an obstruction is encountered by the movable barrier. The current controller continues to restrict current to the motor for a period of time while the motor attempts to move the movable barrier through an obstruction. In variations, the current to the motor is limited by an analog current controller, and in other variations, current is limited by a digital current controller.

Methods and apparatus for controlling the speed of an A. C. induction motor are disclosed and shown in operation for controlling the movement of a barrier. Included are voltage configuration circuits which selectively gate portions of the half-cycles of AC mains voltage to the induction motor. When the motor is started increasing amounts of mains AC voltage is applied to the motor and decreasing portions of the mains AC are applied to the motor during a stopping routine. The motor can also be energized with less than full mains AC to permit differences in barrier movement speed dependent on operating parameters.
