Surgical Leg Length Control

US Patent:
6685655, Feb 3, 2004
Filed:
Oct 18, 2001
Appl. No.:
09/978506
Inventors:
Edward DeMayo - Greenbrae CA
Assignee:
Innovative Medical Products - Plainville CT
International Classification:
A61B 1756
US Classification:
600587, 606102
Abstract:
A hand-held leg length discrepancy device in the form of an extended pin separated a fixed distance from a laser diode determines the length of a patients leg after hip replacement surgery. A self-tapping first indication screw is partially inserted within the patients pelvis prior to surgery, the extended pin is positioned on the screw and the laser beam is directed on the patients leg. The location of the laser beam is recorded by means of an indelible ink mark or a drill hole. After surgery, the extended pin is positioned on the screw on the hip and the laser beam is again directed on the second mark or drill hole on the leg to determine any change in distance there between.

Bone Graft Inserter Device

US Patent:
6582438, Jun 24, 2003
Filed:
Sep 28, 2001
Appl. No.:
09/966207
Inventors:
Edward DeMayo - Greenbrae CA
Assignee:
IMP, Inc. - Plainville CT
International Classification:
A61B 1758
US Classification:
606 92, 606 94
Abstract:
A surgical tool in the form of a three piece bone graft inserter includes a pair of concentric cylinders having elongated apertures formed in the side walls of the cylinders to allow the interior of one of the cylinders to be loaded with the bone graft material, and a plunger that extends through both cylinders. Rotating one of the cylinders thereby “closes” “the apertures creating a closed cylinder filled with the graft material. The ends of the cylinders are inserted into the bone void and the plunger is advanced forward to move the graft material into the bone cavity.

Laser Length Discrepancy Device

US Patent:
6383149, May 7, 2002
Filed:
Oct 5, 2000
Appl. No.:
09/679622
Inventors:
Edward DeMayo - Greenbrae CA
Assignee:

International Classification:
A61B 5103
US Classification:

Abstract:
A simple hand-held length discrepancy device in the form of a pair of laser diodes separated a fixed distance within a console determines the length of a patients leg after hip replacement surgery. A self-tapping first indication screw is partially inserted within the patients pelvis prior to surgery, the first laser beam is directed on the screw and the second laser beam is directed on the patients leg. The location of the second laser beam is recorded by means of a second indelible ink mark or a second drill hole. After surgery, the first and second laser beams are again directed on the first indication screw on the hip and the second mark or drill hole on the leg to determine any change in distance there between.
