Dr. McCarthy was appointed Instructor of Pediatrics and served as the Child Protection Representative for New York Hospital/Cornell Medical Center where she became the first clinical director of The Children’s Advocacy Center of Manhattan, coordinating the investigation of physical or sexual abuse of children, Dr. McCarthy served for six years as Assistant Professor of Pediatrics at New York University School of Medicine, where she was in charge of critically ill newborns in the NICU at both NYU and Bellevue Hospitals. During this time, she also published her research results on the early medical treatment of osteogenesis imperfecta (brittle bone disease) in newborns using bisphosphonates
