System For Providing Assured Power To A Critical Load

System For Providing Assured Power To A Critical Load

US Patent:
RE39710, Jul 3, 2007
Filed:
Mar 16, 2004
Appl. No.:
10/802119
Inventors:
Douglas Gibbons Young - Henderson NV, US
Herbert C. Healy - Windsor CT, US
Ricky M. Ross - Ellington CT, US
Assignee:
UTC Fuel Cells, LLC - South Windsor CT
International Classification:
H02J 7/00
US Classification:
307 64, 307 43, 307 44, 307 45, 307 70, 307 80
Abstract:
A power system () is provided for economically supplying uninterrupted electrical power to one or more critical loads (). One or more fuel cell power plants () provide one substantially continuous source of power, and a utility grid () provides another source of power. The fuel cell power plants () are adapted to be, and are, normally substantially continuously connected and providing power to, the critical load(s) (). A rapidly-acting static switch () selectively connects and disconnects and reconnects the grid power supply () to the critical load(s) () and with the fuel cell power plant(s) () for abnormal and normal grid operation, respectively. A switch controller () controls the state of the static switch () to connect the grid power source () with the critical load(s) () and the rapidly () fuel cell power plant(s) () during normal operation of the grid (), and to rapidly (less than 4 ms) disconnect the grid power source () from the load(s) () and the fuel cell power plant(s) () when operation of the grid () deviates from normal beyond a limit. each include power conditioning systems () () () ().

Control Of Multiple Power Plants At A Site To Provide A Distributed Resource In A Utility Grid

Control Of Multiple Power Plants At A Site To Provide A Distributed Resource In A Utility Grid

US Patent:
RE41821, Oct 12, 2010
Filed:
Dec 21, 2004
Appl. No.:
11/019150
Inventors:
Ricky M. Ross - Ellington CT, US
Herbert C. Healy - Windsor CT, US
Douglas Gibbons Young - Henderson NV, US
Assignee:
UTC Power Corporation - South Windsor CT
International Classification:
G05D 11/00
US Classification:
700286, 700 22, 429 12, 429 13
Abstract:
A site management system () is provided for a power system () at site in a utility distribution grid (). The power system () includes multiple fuel cell power plants, e. g. , fuel cells, () and one or more loads (), for selective connection/disconnection with the grid (). The site management system () controls the power plants () in an integrated manner, alternatively in a grid connected mode and a grid independent mode. The multiple power plants () at the site may be viewed and operated as a unified distributed resource on the grid (). The site management system () provides signals representative of the present power capability (Kw Capacity—) of each of the power plants (), and a signal (Total Kw Capacity—) representative of the total present power capability at the site. These power representations are used to appropriately assign power dispatch loadings to the respective fuel cells power plants () in the grid connected mode and in the grid independent mode, and may also be used for load shedding.

System For Providing Assured Power To A Critical Load

US Patent:
7061139, Jun 13, 2006
Filed:
Sep 26, 2002
Appl. No.:
10/255921
Inventors:
Douglas Gibbons Young - Henderson NV, US
Herbert C. Healy - Windsor CT, US
Assignee:
UTC Fuel Cells, LLC - South Windsor CT
International Classification:
H02J 3/38
US Classification:
307 45, 307 64
Abstract:
A first AC power source comprising a power plant (), and a second power source, typically grid (), are normally connected via a high speed isolation switching means () to provide sufficient AC power to a critical load (). The power plant () comprises a power generating means, e. g. a fuel cell, () and a power conditioning system (PCS) () having an inverter (). Power assurance means () is/are operatively connected to at least one of the first and second power sources to enhance an even and continuous supply of power to the critical load (). The power assurance means () is/are operatively connected to the PCS inverter (), and may be one, or a combination of, a surge suppression means (), a double-conversion power connection means () having a rectifier (); and/or stored energy means (), such as a capacitor ().
