Blind Edgewise Connector

US Patent:
4780019, Oct 25, 1988
Filed:
Jan 27, 1987
Appl. No.:
7/006949
Inventors:
Roger N. Johnson - Mercer Island WA
Douglas L. Johnson - Seattle WA
Assignee:
Radiant Optics Inc. - Bellevue WA
International Classification:
F16B 900
US Classification:
403195
Abstract:
A connector body having a body portion insertable through a hole in a base sheet of material and an enlarged head portion so that the head portion will not pass through the hole. The body portion comprises spaced-apart, inflexible arms that project outwardly from the surface of the base sheet and define a slit therebetween. The sheet to be edgewise connected is received between the spaced-apart arms and a fastener is inserted int the slit, causing the edgewise connected sheet to be forced against one of the two opposing arms while the fastener is forced against the other opposing arm. Access for the fastener can be from the opposite side of the base sheet to which the edge connected sheet is attached through an aperture extending through the head portion and communicating with the slit or, in another embodiment, can be from the same side of the base sheet to which the edgewise connected sheet is attached. The fastener can be a screw, a resilient or rigid wedge, or a chemically expansive compound.

Sensor System For Fluid Detection And Discrimination

US Patent:
2012016, Jun 28, 2012
Filed:
Dec 27, 2011
Appl. No.:
13/338142
Inventors:
Douglas M. Johnson - Seattle WA, US
International Classification:
G01N 21/59, G01N 21/64
US Classification:
2504581, 356436
Abstract:
A light transmitting optical fiber shines light at a side edge portion of a hemispherical lens. The light is transmitted along the periphery of the lens to a second side edge portion located opposite the first side edge portion. A light sensitive component detects light at the second edge portion which light resulted from the light transmitted at the first side edge portion. The intensity of light detected at the second side edge portion is indicative of the fluid to which the lens is exposed, and can be evaluated and signaled by a microprocessor.

Fiber Optic Infrared Sensor

US Patent:
5712934, Jan 27, 1998
Filed:
Jul 25, 1996
Appl. No.:
8/687754
Inventors:
Douglas M. Johnson - Seattle WA
International Classification:
G02B 600
US Classification:
385 12
Abstract:
There is disclosed an optical sensor comprising a light source, light detector and signal generator, and an optical fiber extending between the light source and detector. The optical fiber includes a sensing length comprising a return bend in the fiber, where the return bend has a bend radius less than or equal to 2. 5 times the radius of the optical fiber. In one embodiment, the sensing length further includes a planar sensing surface. A method for detecting the presence of a medium in an environment using the optical sensor of the invention is also disclosed.

Fiber Optic Sensor Enclosure System

US Patent:
5966477, Oct 12, 1999
Filed:
Jul 25, 1997
Appl. No.:
8/900260
Inventors:
Douglas M. Johnson - Seattle WA
International Classification:
G02B 600
US Classification:
385 12
Abstract:
There is disclosed a sensor system comprising a sensor for detecting and signaling the presence of a fluid in an enclosure. The sensor system can be installed or incorporated within electronics and communications enclosures that house fluid-sensitive components and is useful in the early detection and warning of fluid leaks into such enclosures. In addition to the sensor, the system includes a means for conducting fluids entering the enclosure to the sensor and absorbent material to absorb any entering fluid.
