Electrically Noncontacting Transmission Control Mechanism

US Patent:
5660080, Aug 26, 1997
Filed:
Jul 19, 1995
Appl. No.:
8/504358
Inventors:
Stephen W. Rector - Metamora IL
Douglas D. Schumann - Southington CT
Robert R. Siegler - Berlin CT
Assignee:
Caterpillar Inc. - Peoria IL
International Classification:
B60K 2000, F16H 5910
US Classification:
74473R
Abstract:
An electrical transmission control mechanism for shifting a transmission of a machine is provided. The control mechanism includes a control assembly that has rotational motion. A plurality of contactless sensors detect the amount of rotational movement of the control assembly and responsively produce signals that are indicative of a desired speed and/or direction of the transmission. A coupling arrangement couples the rotational motion of the control assembly to the contactless sensors to isolate the contactless sensors from mechanical loading that is imposed on the control assembly.

Inductively Coupled Position Detection System

US Patent:
4646087, Feb 24, 1987
Filed:
Nov 3, 1983
Appl. No.:
6/548410
Inventors:
Douglas D. Schumann - Southington CT
International Classification:
G08C 1906
US Classification:
34087031
Abstract:
An inductively coupled position sensing system wherein voltages induced in plural stationary sensor coils are combined and synchronously detected. Variation in the induced voltages results from movement of a drive coil mechanically coupled to a member the position or orientation of which is of interest.

Trailerable Robot For Crushing Vehicles

US Patent:
5052680, Oct 1, 1991
Filed:
Feb 7, 1990
Appl. No.:
7/477042
Inventors:
Douglas J. Malewicki - Irvine CA
Philip C. Emmons - Anaheim CA
Robert M. Kubinski - Garden Grove CA
Douglas D. Schumann - Southington CT
Assignee:
Monster Robot, Inc. - Malibu CA
International Classification:
A63G 3100
US Classification:
272 1R
Abstract:
A mechanical robot having hydraulically operated arms, mandible claws, neck, head and jaw, resembles a giant prehistoric reptile. It is driven from an on-board cockpit and is capable of picking up an automobile and crushing it, then biting into it with large teeth located within a powerful jaw. Various audible and visual effects are produced during operation thereby generating a frightful spectacle for exhibition, promotion and entertainment. The robot is capable of folding into a rigid structure and being attached to a trailer tractor for road hauling on its own wheels.
