Process For Electrocoating Metal Blanks And Coiled Metal Substrates

US Patent:
6676820, Jan 13, 2004
Filed:
Mar 2, 2001
Appl. No.:
09/798627
Inventors:
Donald D. Emmonds - Ford City PA
Catharine A. Palmer - Zelienople PA
Linda K. Anderson - Pittsburgh PA
Robin M. Peffer - Valencia PA
Donald W. Boyd - Cheswick PA
Paul R. Kerr - Allison Park PA
Assignee:
PPG Industries Ohio, Inc. - Cleveland OH
International Classification:
C25D 1312
US Classification:
204486, 204488, 204512
Abstract:
Processes for forming a coating on electroconductive flat blanks having two major surfaces and sheared edges are provided. Also provided is a process for forming a multi-composite coating on a pre-sheared, electroconductive, flat blank having two major surfaces and sheared edges. Methods for forming and coating metal blanks are also provided. The present invention further provides a pre-sheared, flat electroconductive blank having two major surfaces and coated with a multi-layer composite coating composition on one major surface. The present invention also provides a method for coating a continuous metal strip, optionally, thereafter forming a coated blank therefrom, and, optionally, applying a second coating to the blank.

Appl. No.:
09/798103
Inventors:
Donald Emmonds - Ford City PA, US
Catharine Palmer - Zelienople PA, US
International Classification:
C25D005/10, C25D017/00
US Classification:

Abstract:
A continuous electrocoat apparatus is provided for applying a coating onto a substantially flat substrate, e.g., an electroconductive substrate in coil or blank form. In one embodiment, the apparatus includes a first electrocoat tank having a coating region and a non-conductive conveyor extending at least partially into the first electrocoat tank and defining a conveyor path. A plurality of electrically conductive supports are carried on the conveyor. A connecting system is configured to selectively place at least a portion of the supports in electrical contact with an electrical power source when the selected supports are in the coating region of the first electrocoat tank.

Treatment Of Ultrafiltrate By Electrodialysis

US Patent:
4581111, Apr 8, 1986
Filed:
Mar 28, 1984
Appl. No.:
6/594183
Inventors:
Roger M. Christenson - Gibsonia PA
Donald D. Emmonds - Ford City PA
Matthew S. Scott - Pittsburgh PA
Assignee:
PPG Industries, Inc. - Pittsburgh PA
International Classification:
C25D 2122, C25D 2118
US Classification:
2041821
Abstract:
A process for electrodialyzing ultrafiltrate and an electrodialysis cell for use in the process are disclosed. The ultrafiltrate contains ionic materials which form a deposit on at least one of the electrodes of the electrodialysis cell impairing the electrical efficiency of the cell. This problem is overcome by removing the deposited electrode from the cell while simultaneously replacing it with electrode relatively free of deposit, thereby restoring the electrical efficiency of the cell. The invention is particularly useful for treatment of the ultrafiltrate of an electrodeposition bath.
