Abstract:
A handheld device for the treatment of glaucoma that includes a casing, an ultrasonic transducer, a power supply, a transmission member operatively associated with the ultrasonic transducer, and a tip member located at the end of the transmission member. The ultrasonic energy is transferred from the ultrasonic transducer to the tip member. The tip includes a concave eye-engaging surface.

The method includes the steps of providing an ultrasonic device that emits ultrasonic energy, holding the ultrasonic instrument at a location external to the trabecular meshwork, transmitting the ultrasonic energy at a frequency to a desired location for a predetermined time, dislodging material built up in the trabecular meshwork, and generating heat that initiates biochemical changes in the eye.
