Abstract:
A matrix material to be added to a standard ammonium nitrate-fuel oil dry explosive to form an economical slurry explosive having excellent water resistant properties includes an oxidizer solution chosen from the group of an aqueous sodium perchlorate solution, an aqueous ammonium perchlorate solution, an aqueous calcium nitrate solution, or a combination thereof, along with a fuel such as ethylene glycol or fuel oil and a thickening agent such as a guar gum in combination with an acid such as glacial acetic acid. The oxidizer solution generally makes up about 94%-97% by weight of the matrix. The slurry explosive is made by mixing the matrix with a standard ammonium nitrate-fuel oil dry explosive and then adding a cross linker to the mixture so that it forms a gel. The matrix may make up between about 14% to 40% by weight of the explosive, and preferably makes up about 20% by weight.

A solid explosive composition is made by curing a mixture of a 20-50% by weight of a liquid matrix, 50-80% by weight of an essentially anhydrous inorganic chlorate or perchlorate salt, and 0-15% of a nitrate salt after transferring said mixture to a mold. The matrix can include 50-84% by weight of a non-explosive liquid fuel selected from the group consisting of polyhydric alcohols, lower aliphatic alcohols, ketones, and hydrocarbons; 0-15% by weight of a nitrate oxidizer salt; 0-15% by weight water; 0-15% by weight of a thickener; and 0-5% by weight of an acid.

Abstract:
Explosive compositions are disclosed which comprise a nitrate salt oxidizer and glycol still bottoms alone or in combination with water. The still bottoms function as a fuel oil replacement (FOR) in ANFO explosives. Glycol still bottoms can be mixed with thickeners, cross-linkers and other additives to make a bottoms matrix. The bottoms matrix and a nitrate salt oxidizer combine to make explosive compositions which show an improvement in performance and water-resistance when compared to standard ANFO explosives.

Abstract:
Flowable materials such as slurry explosives are transported down a mine shaft by providing a pipeline from the surface to the level in the mine where the material is needed. A plug is slidably and sealingly positioned within the pipeline and connected through a cable to a winch whereby the plug can be raised or lowered within the pipeline. With the plug near the top of the pipeline, material is loaded into the pipeline on top of the plug. The plug and material are then lowered to the desired depth in the mine and the material drained from the pipeline.
