Abstract:
The finned pervenous lead electrically connects an electrical generator with an internal organ and comprises a flexible electrically conductive insulated lead with proximal and distal ends. The proximal end has an electrical connection for connecting the lead to the electrical generator and a distal electrode assembly connected to the distal end of said lead. A distal portion of the lead proximal to the distal electrode assembly has an axis and at least two tissue-engaging, thin, flexible, flat fins which are circumferentially sidewise deflectible and which project radially outwardly from different radial locations on the lead at about the same axial location on the lead. Each fin extends outwardly in a plane which includes the axis of the lead distal portion and each fin is attached to the lead at a fold line extending substantially parallel to the axis of the lead distal portion. Substantially an entire flat side of each of the fins is capable of folding circumferentially about the fold line against, contacting and conforming to the adjacent circumferential surface of the lead without overlapping when the fins are bent in the same sense around the lead and about the fold lines which define the hinges adjacent the lead. The diameter of a cylindrical envelope defined by the fins on the lead and folded against the lead can thus be kept as small as possible and interference by the projecting fins with an introducer sheath through which the lead is fed into the vascular system can be reduced by manually twisting the lead about its axis to fold the fins at the fold lines around and against the circumferential surface of the lead in a non-overlapping manner.

A connector assembly for use in a cardiac pacer system comprising a cardiac pacer including a pacer case having a top wall and a pacing lead having a distal end, a distal end portion, a proximal end and a proximal end portion with at least one connector band mounted on said proximal end portion. A neck assembly is mounted to the top wall of the pacer case. The connector assembly comprises an elastomeric neck mounted on the top wall of the pacer case and forms part of the neck assembly. The neck has a lumen therein for receiving the proximal end portion of the pacing lead. A resilient conductive member is mounted in the neck and is positioned to contact the connector band on the proximal end portion of the lead received in the lumen. The neck assembly further includes a removable wedge for urging the resilient conductive member against the connector band.

Abstract:
An implantable microinfusion pump system for dispensing medication at a prescribed infusion rate within the human body includes a hermetically sealed housing in which a power source and circuitry for actuating the pump are contained. A permanently magnetized piston is mounted for reciprocative fill and pump strokes within a pump chamber defined by a pump body member which extends between parallel-spaced walls of the housing. The body member communicates at one end with an expandable medicament reservoir adjacent one wall of the housing, and at the other end with a catheter for conveying medicament to the body. A two stage valve arrangement causes medicament to enter the pump chamber during fill strokes of short duration and to be dispensed from the pump chamber at the prescribed infusion rate during longer duration pump strokes. To minimize current drain from the power source the piston is driven through the shorter duration fill strokes by magnetic actuator windings within the housing, and through the longer duration pump strokes by magnetic attraction between the piston and a magnetic pole piece.

Abstract:
A suture forming surgical tool particularly useful in attaching an epicardial pacer electrode to the heart. The tool has an elongate body and a manually operable plunger slidable in the body. The electrode is releasably secured to a distal end of the tool. In a first portion of its travel, the plunger acts on a pair of pusher wires that each drive lengths of malleable sutures through tubular dies that have curved central bores which impart curvatures of essentially predetermined radii to the sutures. As the curved sutures are ejected from the dies they pass through the adjacent heart tissue and form circular loops which securely attach the electrode to the heart. In a second portion of its travel, the plunger detaches the electrode and its lead wire from the tool.

Abstract:
In the implantable pressure sensor disclosed herein, a radio-opaque liquid is contained within a resiliently compressible vessel of a silicone rubber, the volume of liquid actually contained within the vessel being then variable as a function of the pressure or force applied to the vessel. The silicone rubber is rendered impervious to the radio-opaque liquid by a treatment which involves expandng and saturating the cured silicone rubber with a mixture of a hydrocarbon solvent such as heptane containing a dissolved wax such as beeswax. The solvent expands and saturates the silicone rubber, carrying beeswax into the silicone rubber. When the solvent evaporates, the beeswax is then trapped within the interstices of the silicone rubber, under tension.

An implantable medication dispensing system includes an integral reservoir from which medicament is dispensed by a manually actuated micro-infusion pump system. Medicament is added to and removed from the reservoir as required through a liquid-sealed fill port having a integral needle-actuated safety valve. Upon introduction of the needle through a self-sealing septum, the safety valve is actuated open to allow medicament to be introduced and withdrawn by the needle. Upon removal of the needle the septum is closed by radial compression and the safety valve is actuated closed to prevent pressure flow through the fill port.

The cardiac pacer lead disclosed herein may be secured or effectively sutured to cardiac tissue by ejecting a length of malleable wire through a tubular die having, at its distal end, a curved central bore which imparts a curvature of essentially predetermined radius to the wire. An implantable manually-actuated dispensing system includes a housing wherein a reservoir and dispensing port are provided. Medicament within the reservoir is urged through the dispensing port in predetermined uniform dosages by a fluid circuit which serially includes a safety pump and a metering pump. The safety pump is first actuated and released to cause a quantity of medicament to be advanced through the fluid circuit into the chamber of the metering pump. The metering pump is next actuated to cause a predetermined dosage from the advanced medicament to be dispensed through the dispensing port. Check valves prevent reverse flow through the circuit and prevent medicament from entering the metering pump except upon actuation and release of the safety pump.
