Electrical Strike System Control For Subsurface Boring Equipment

US Patent:
5684466, Nov 4, 1997
Filed:
Sep 12, 1995
Appl. No.:
8/526970
Inventors:
Donald J. Keating - Perry OK
Joel B. Edwards - Perry OK
Bradley E. Mitchell - Perry OK
Kelvin P. Self - Stillwater OK
Assignee:
The Charles Machine Work, Inc. - Perry OK
International Classification:
G08B 2100
US Classification:
340662
Abstract:
An electrical strike sensing system for providing an alarm if the underground boring equipment encounters a potentially hazardous condition. The system senses current carried through the equipment, as well as the voltage between the equipment and a reference. The measured current is converted to a percentage of a reference current, and the voltage is converted to a percentage of a reference voltage. The current and voltage percentages are added, and if the sum exceeds 100%, the alarms are activated. The current and voltage percentages, as well as the date and time of the strike, are stored in a nonvolatile memory.

Hydraulic Circuit For Automatic Control Of A Horizontal Boring Machine

US Patent:
RE37923, Dec 10, 2002
Filed:
Oct 15, 1998
Appl. No.:
09/173344
Inventors:
Donald J. Keating - Perry OK
George E. Strecker - Edmond OK
Michael T. Teiga - Loudonville OH
Joe G. Worlow - Punta Gorda FL
Assignee:
The Charles Machine Works, Inc. - Perry OK
International Classification:
E21C 516
US Classification:
137 2, 60426, 13711806, 173 1, 173 8, 173 9
Abstract:
A hydraulic circuit ( ) is disclosed for use in controlling a horizontal boring machine which requires hydraulic fluid under pressure for rotating a drill bit or backreamer through a rotation circuit and hydraulic fluid under pressure for thrusting the drill bit or backreamer within the bore hole through a thrust circuit. Pressures from both the thrust circuit and control circuit are combined through restrictors in a mixing zone or area ( ). The control port of a diversion valve ( ) is connected to mixing zone ( ). When the combined pressure in the mixing zone exceeds the adjustable spring bias on the diversion valve, the diversion valve will open, diverting fluid from the thrust circuit to a low pressure zone. This will cause a reduction in the pressure in the rotation circuit as well. The reduction of both pressures will reduce the combined pressure in the mixing zone ( ), causing the diversion valve to close and the pressures to increase.

Hydraulic Circuit For Automatic Control Of A Horizontal Boring Machine

US Patent:
5564455, Oct 15, 1996
Filed:
Jan 6, 1995
Appl. No.:
8/369932
Inventors:
Donald J. Keating - Perry OK
George E. Strecker - Edmond OK
Michael T. Teiga - Stillwater OK
Joe G. Worlow - Stillwater OK
Assignee:
The Charles Machine Works, Inc. - Perry OK
International Classification:
E21C 516
US Classification:
137 2
Abstract:
A hydraulic circuit (10) is disclosed for use in controlling a horizontal boring machine which requires hydraulic fluid under pressure for rotating a drill bit or backreamer through a rotation circuit and hydraulic fluid under pressure for thrusting the drill bit or backreamer within the bore hole through a thrust circuit. Pressures from both the thrust circuit and control circuit are combined through restrictors in a mixing zone or area (26). The control port of a diversion valve (32) is connected to mixing zone (26). When the combined pressure in the mixing zone exceeds the adjustable spring bias on the diversion valve, the diversion valve will open, diverting fluid from the thrust circuit to a low pressure zone. This will cause a reduction in the pressure in the rotation circuit as well. The reduction of both pressures will reduce the combined pressure in the mixing zone (26), causing the diversion valve to close and the pressures to increase.
