Deflectors For Pendent-Type Fire Protection Sprinklers

US Patent:
5865256, Feb 2, 1999
Filed:
Sep 25, 1996
Appl. No.:
8/718914
Inventors:
Donald B. Pounder - North Kingstown RI
Assignee:
Grinnell Corporation - Cranston RI
International Classification:
A62C 3568
US Classification:
169 37
Abstract:
A pendent-type fire protection sprinkler with a body defining an orifice and outlet for flow of fluid, and a deflector positioned coaxial with the outlet for impingement of fluid flow thereupon. The deflector has one or a combination of features for improved performance. For example, the deflector may have a frusto-conically shaped recess within a central area facing the sprinkler outlet, the recess defined by a surface slanted at a predetermined acute angle to the horizontal, with a plurality of holes or slots defined by the slanted surface, the recess being surrounded by an essentially flat outer area perpendicular to the sprinkler outlet axis. The deflector may have a bump, or other irregularity, on the sprinkler deflector inside surface opposed to the sprinkler outlet on each of the opposite tines in a plane perpendicular to a plane of the sprinkler frame arms. The deflector may have openings at about 45. degree. to the plane of the frame arms, the openings shaped with the width of each opening gradually decreasing towards the deflector periphery.

Upright, Early Suppression Fast Response Sprinkler

US Patent:
RE44329, Jul 2, 2013
Filed:
Aug 19, 2011
Appl. No.:
13/213721
Inventors:
Donald B. Pounder - North Kingstown RI, US
Michael A. Fischer - West Kingston RI, US
Assignee:
Tyco Fire Products LP - Lansdale PA
International Classification:
A62C 37/08
US Classification:
169 37, 169 39, 169 16, 239498, 239518
Abstract:
An upright ESFR sprinkler includes a generally tubular body, at least one frame arm, a closure assembly, an unactuated heat responsive trigger assembly and a deflector assembly with a K-factor greater than 14, and preferably 16. 8. The passageway extends between inlet and outlet openings. The closure is positioned proximate the outlet so as to occlude the passageway with a Bellville seal being. An ejection spring is coupled to the closure assembly. The heat responsive trigger assembly has a Response Time Index of 40 metersecond(msec) or less. The deflector assembly includes a nosepiece and a plate like redirecting member. The plate like redirecting member faces the outlet and is coupled to the at least one frame arm and spaced from the outlet opening. The plate shaped member includes a first generally planar portion, a conical second portion, and a third portion extending from the conical second portion. The third portion includes a plurality of tines and a plurality of slots with at least one slot disposed between every two tines so that, when the heat responsive trigger assembly is actuated and the closure is positioned to allow a density of water to flow from the outlet of the body so as to suppress a fire of a particular commodity situated beneath the ceiling of 35 feet or less.

Deflector For Upright-Type Fire Sprinklers

US Patent:
5862994, Jan 26, 1999
Filed:
Jun 25, 1996
Appl. No.:
8/671814
Inventors:
Donald B. Pounder - North Kingstown RI
Michael A. Fischer - West Kingston RI
Assignee:
Grinnell Corporation - Cranston RI
International Classification:
B05B 126
US Classification:
239498
Abstract:
An upright-type fire protection sprinkler with a body defining an orifice and outlet for flow of fluid, and a deflector positioned coaxial with the outlet for impingement of fluid flow thereupon, has one or a combination of the following features for improved performance. The deflector may have an inner surface with a recessed central area, and a recessed redirecting area about the central area at a predetermined acute angle and axial offset thereto. The deflector has tines with inner surfaces inclined towards the outlet, at least a first set of tines disposed in planes at about 45. degree. to a first plane of sprinkler frame arms, the surfaces of the first set of tines being inclined at an angle relatively more outward from the axis than the angle of inner surfaces of adjacent tines. The tines may include a second set of tines in a plane perpendicular to the first plane, and a third set of tines in the first plane, inner surfaces of the second set of tines having a second set width and inner surfaces of the third set of tines having a third set width about 0. 15 to 0. 65 times the second set width.

Sprinkler Head With Improved Spray Uniformity

US Patent:
4580729, Apr 8, 1986
Filed:
Jan 22, 1985
Appl. No.:
6/693123
Inventors:
Donald B. Pounder - North Kingstown RI
Assignee:
Grinnell Fire Protection Systems Co., Inc. - Providence RI
International Classification:
B05B 126, A62C 3708
US Classification:
239524
Abstract:
A fire protection sprinkler head which can reduce or substantially eliminate frame shadow effects that produce non-uniformity in spray pattern. The head is of the known type having a base with a throat through which fire retardant fluid flows and two or more frame arms which extend outwardly from the base and joint in an arch-form to support, in the path of fluid discharged from the throat, a central boss which deflects the fluid outwardly. It is found that a surprising reduction in frame shadow affects is obtained by constructing the frame arms to conform to the set of three essential parameters: (1) the portion of each frame arm in the region adjacent the boss is shaped and positioned to intercept the stream profile to a depth of at least one third the distance from the outside periphery to the center of the profile; (ii) the angle of the leading edge of each frame arm in this fluid intercept region, relative to the axis of flow, is less than about 25 degrees; and (iii) the cross-section of each frame arm in the fluid intercept region is slender, its length being two or more times the thickness of the frame arm, with the surfaces of each frame arm shaped to guide the fluid intercepted by that frame arm to flow into the region immediately downstream of its trailing edge.

Extended Coverage Pendent Sprinkler

US Patent:
2010013, Jun 3, 2010
Filed:
Apr 21, 2008
Appl. No.:
12/595039
Inventors:
Donald B. Pounder - North Kingstown RI, US
Michael R. Landi - Boston MA, US
Assignee:
Tyco Fire Products LP - Lansdale PA
International Classification:
A62C 35/00
US Classification:
169 37
Abstract:
An extended coverage pendent sprinkler configured for the fire protection of an occupancy classified as any one of: light hazard, ordinary hazard, extra hazard, rack storage with solid shelves and any combination thereof. The sprinkler preferably includes a body having an inlet and an outlet spaced from the inlet to define a passageway to further define a sprinkler axis and a K factor ranging from 11 gpm/(psi)to about 25 gpm/(psi). A deflector is spaced from the outlet to distribute a fire fighting fluid over a maximum protection area of about 196 square feet, and having one or more combination of features as described in the preferred deflector described herein.
