Catheter Depth, Position And Orientation Location System

US Patent:
5645065, Jul 8, 1997
Filed:
Apr 11, 1995
Appl. No.:
8/420020
Inventors:
Alan R. Shapiro - Sharon MA
Donald A. Kay - Sharon MA
Assignee:
Navion Biomedical Corporation - Stoughton MA
International Classification:
A61B 505
US Classification:
1286531
Abstract:
A system for externally locating a sensor in tissue, comprising an external probe including at least first and second electromagnetic output coils with non-parallel longitudinal axes; and output coil driver for alternately energizing the first and second output coils, for generating a time-varying magnetic field which penetrates the patient's skin; a sensor coil, having a longitudinal axis, for developing an induced electrical voltage in response to the time-varying magnetic field; a distance determinator, responsive to the induced voltage from the sensor coil, for determining from the induced voltage, the distance between the output coils and the sensor coil, independently of the relative angle, in a horizontal plane, between the sensor coil longitudinal axis, and the longitudinal axes of the output coils; and a direction determinator for determining and displaying the direction, in the horizontal plane, in which the sensor coil longitudinal axis is pointing.

Method And Apparatus For Catheter Location Determination

US Patent:
4905698, Mar 6, 1990
Filed:
Sep 13, 1988
Appl. No.:
7/243689
Inventors:
Clair L. Strohl - Norfolk MA
Michael C. Ferragamo - N. Dighton MA
Donald A. Kay - Sharon MA
Alan R. Shapiro - Sharon MA
Gary R. Whipple - S. Attleboro MA
Assignee:
Pharmacia Deltec Inc. - St. Paul MN
International Classification:
A61B 612
US Classification:
128653R
Abstract:
A method and apparatus (10) for determining accurately the location of the tip (14) of a catheter (16) inside biological tissue is disclosed including a locator (34) having a coil (38) wound axially on a core (36) and a detector (12) in the form of a coil (28) wound on a core (24) removably positionable within catheter (16) adjacent the tip (14). A controller (20) generates AC current to coil (38) to produce an electromagnetic field and compares it with the output voltage developed in coil ( b 28) when the locator (34) comes within close physical proximity to detecetor (12). Locator (34) includes an amber LED indicator (42) which is energized when the locator (34) is behind the detector (12) and the monitored output voltage is in phase with the generated alternating current and includes a red LED indicator (44) which is energized when the locator (34) is beyond the detector (12) and the monitored output voltage is 180. degree. out of phase with the generated alternating current. The controller (20) includes a beeper (48) which provides an audible indicator when energization changes between the indicators (42, 44).

Drug Administration Needle Unit

US Patent:
4743231, May 10, 1988
Filed:
Jul 6, 1987
Appl. No.:
7/070172
Inventors:
Donald A. Kay - Sharon MA
Per Troein - Foxboro MA
Assignee:
Pharmacia Nutech - Walpole MA
International Classification:
H61M 500
US Classification:
604180
Abstract:
A needle or cannula set especially adapted to access an implanted drug delivery portal includes a rigid base having a flat undersurface and a low profile. The base supports one end of a needle so that the needle projects from the base perpendicular to the base undersurface. One end of a flexible tube is secured to the base in fluid communication with the needle and the opposite end of the tube is terminated by a connector. A complaint pad is mounted to the base undersurface to assure proper seating of the base against the skin of the patient when the needle unit is inserted in the patient. The set also includes a handle which releasably connects to the base to facilitate inserting the needle unit into and withdrawing it from the patient and an adhesive dressing which is arranged to drape over the base with its edge margin extending all around the base for anchoring the needle unit to the patient and for providing an occlusive seal all around the puncture site. The set may also include a needle cover releasably coupled to the base to protectively enclose the needle and compliant pad prior to using the needle unit.

Catheter Depth, Position And Orientation Location System

US Patent:
5425367, Jun 20, 1995
Filed:
Sep 4, 1991
Appl. No.:
7/755024
Inventors:
Alan R. Shapiro - Sharon MA
Donald A. Kay - Sharon MA
Clair L. Strohl - Norfolk MA
Assignee:
Navion Biomedical Corporation - Stoughton MA
International Classification:
A61B 505, A61B 1900
US Classification:
1286531
Abstract:
A system for externally locating the depth and orientation of a catheter in tissue with an external probe which generates a virtual rotating magnetic field. The catheter includes an inductive coil for developing an induced signal in response to the virtual rotating magnetic field. An indicating device such as a light bar display or digital readout indicates the strength of the induced signal for locating, independently of the relative angular orientation of the probe and the catheter, the depth in the tissue of the catheter.
