Philosophy:
One of the most overused statements heard in medical school admissions interviews is 'I want to help people.' And it's true: we do.
I went into medicine because it is wonderful to be part of what gives people relief from pain and illness. And there's the ripple effect when you help someone your office that goes well beyond their family, coworkers, & friends--is is incredibly satisfying to see.
Intellectually, this is one of the most exciting fields in medicine today. What we know now, compared to what we knew 23 years ago when I first trained in sleep, is leaps and bounds ahead of that time--and yet there is still so much to discover. With all we are finding in recent years about sleep disorders and their impact on heart disease, diabetes, mood disorders...I could (and do) go on and on. But at the root of it all is this: at the end of the day knowing one more person out there isn't suffering tonight because of something our group was able to do for them or for their family member keeps me coming back every day.
