Ultrasound Imaging Catheter With A Cutting Element

US Patent:
5967984, Oct 19, 1999
Filed:
Nov 27, 1996
Appl. No.:
8/757848
Inventors:
Michael S. H. Chu - Brookline MA
Yem Chin - Burlington MA
Demetrius H. Bagley - Philadelphia PA
William H. Stahley - Andover MA
David K. Young - Boston MA
Christopher G. Fishbein - Norfolk MA
George G. Brusard - Cambridge MA
Assignee:
Boston Scientific Corporation - Natick MA
International Classification:
A61B 812
US Classification:
600439
Abstract:
The invention features a catheter having a catheter body of extended length for insertion within a body of a living being. The catheter also includes an ultrasound imaging device disposed within a distal portion of the catheter body. The ultrasound imaging device generates electrical signals used by an ultrasound imaging system to display a real-time image of tissue surrounding the distal portion of the catheter. The catheter further includes a cutting element, e. g. , an electrode wire or a laser fiber, having a proximal portion disposed within the catheter body. The catheter also includes a mechanism connected to the catheter body that causes the distal portion of the cutting element to extend from the catheter body. The distal portion of the cutting element generates energy in tissue with which it is brought in proximity to form a cut in the tissue. The ultrasound imaging device is positioned relative to the cutting element such that the real-time image produced by the ultrasound imaging system can include the cutting element in relation to the tissue.

Articulating Stone Basket

US Patent:
6676668, Jan 13, 2004
Filed:
Dec 12, 2001
Appl. No.:
10/020749
Inventors:
Steve Mercereau - Conyers GA
Ken Butcher - Conyers GA
Gregg A. VanDusseldorp - Crown Point IN
Demetrius Bagley - Philadelphia PA
Frank Bimbo - Lawrenceville GA
Assignee:
C.R. Baed - Murray Hill NJ
International Classification:
A61B 1722
US Classification:
606127, 606 1
Abstract:
A medical retrieval device includes a handle, two gear racks movably mounted to the handle for longitudinal movement, and a pinion rotatably mounted to the handle so as to engage the two gear racks. Rotation of the pinion moves the gear racks in opposite directions. A basket has at least three legs, an adjacent two of the legs being connected to one of the gear racks, and the remainder of the legs being connected to the other gear rack such that rotation of the pinion displaces the two legs in a first direction and displaces the remainder of the legs in a second direction. Thus rotation of the pinion articulates the basket.

Minimally Invasive Medical Retrieval Device

US Patent:
6203552, Mar 20, 2001
Filed:
Mar 19, 1999
Appl. No.:
9/404874
Inventors:
Demetrius H. Bagley - Philadelphia PA
Timothy G. Vendrely - Kendallville IN
Assignee:
Cook Urological Incorporated - Spencer IN
MED Institute Inc. - West Lafayette IN
International Classification:
A61B 1722, A61B 1750
US Classification:
606127
Abstract:
A minimally invasive medical retrieval device 10 useful for the removal of objects such as stones, calculi, concretions, foreign bodies and the like from the urinary, biliary, vascular or other systems includes a sheath 12 containing at least three wires 14 adjacently disposed in the sheath 12. At least one of the wires 14, and preferably all of them, can be moved longitudinally with respect to the sheath 12. The wires 14 have distal portions 16 which are formed so as to allow the engaging and removal of the object or objects. The distal portions 16 of the wires 14 preferably form a helical basket 22 or 40 particularly adapted for engaging urinary stones, calculi and concretions. Other grasping and manipulating shapes are useful as well. The wires 14 are substantially wedge-shaped in cross-section and substantially fill the entire cross-sectional area of the interior 26 of the sheath 12. The wedge-shaped wires 14 can be partly contained within a stainless steel cannula 28 positioned in the sheath 12.

Flexible Ureteropyeloscope

US Patent:
2003002, Jan 30, 2003
Filed:
Mar 1, 2002
Appl. No.:
10/087622
Inventors:
Edward Grabover - Danbury CT, US
Gregory Konstorum - Stamford CT, US
Demetrius Bagley - Philadelphia PA, US
Michael Conlin - Portland OR, US
Anup Patel - London, GB
Peter Schulam - Malibu CA, US
International Classification:
A61B001/00
US Classification:
600/143000, 600/146000, 600/141000
Abstract:
A flexible ureteropyeloscope having a control section and a shaft extending from the control section. The shaft has a front end with a first active deflection section connected in series with a second active deflection section. The control section is adapted to independently deflect the first and second defection sections. The first and second active deflection sections are adapted to deflect such that a distal end of the ureteropyeloscope can be placed in a calyx of a lower pole of a kidney without the need to passively deflect the front end of the shaft against kidney tissue of a patient to reach the calyx of the lower pole.
