Titanium Dioxide Finishing Process

US Patent:
7247200, Jul 24, 2007
Filed:
Nov 1, 2005
Appl. No.:
11/263702
Inventors:
Alan Roger Eaton - Hendersonville TN, US
Narayanan Sankara Subramanian - Hockessin DE, US
Stephen William Taylor - Chadds Ford PA, US
George A. Schurr - Newark DE, US
David A Zimmerman - Wilmington DE, US
Assignee:
E. I. du Pont de Nemours and Company - Wilmington DE
International Classification:
C09C 1/36, C09C 3/04, C01G 23/047
US Classification:
106437, 106436, 423610, 423611, 423612
Abstract:
This disclosure relates to process for producing titanium dioxide (TiO) pigments, comprising the following steps: a) oxidizing a mixture of titanium tetrahalide and a rutile forming agent, such as aluminum halide, present in the vapor phase and in the presence of a nucleant to form a gaseous suspension comprising titanium dioxide particles; b) passing the gaseous suspension to a cooling conduit; c) introducing scouring material into the cooling conduit; wherein the particles of the scouring material have a diameter in the range of about 0. 25 mm to about 12. 7 mm; d) separating the vapor phase to form a powder comprising the titanium dioxide particles and the scouring material; and e) simultaneously subjecting the powder to substantially uniform heating at a temperature of about 300° C. to about 600° C. and reducing the size of the titanium dioxide particles and the particles of the scouring material in the powder to a mean particle size of about 50 nm to about 1000 nm, whereby the titanium dioxide pigment has a chloride content of less than about 500 ppm.

Granular Scrubs For Use In Manufacturing Titanium Dioxide Pigment

US Patent:
5759511, Jun 2, 1998
Filed:
Aug 26, 1996
Appl. No.:
8/703303
Inventors:
Russell Bertrum Diemer - Wilmington DE
Narayanan Sankara Subramanian - Hockessin DE
David A. Zimmerman - Wilmington DE
Assignee:
E. I. du Pont de Nemours and Company - Wilmington DE
International Classification:
C01G 23047
US Classification:
423613
Abstract:
This invention relates to an improved process for making titanium dioxide pigment, wherein granular scouring particles (scrubs) comprising specific water-soluble salts (KCl, CsCl, or mixtures thereof) are introduced into a cooling conduit containing a hot gaseous suspension of titanium dioxide particulate. The process provides titanium dioxide pigment having higher carbon black undertone (CBU) levels.

Method Of Preparing Grinding Media Consisting Essentially Of Sintered Tio.sub.2 Particles

US Patent:
6036999, Mar 14, 2000
Filed:
Jul 3, 1997
Appl. No.:
8/887552
Inventors:
Qian Qiu Zhao - Landenberg PA
David Allen Zimmerman - Wilmington DE
International Classification:
B05D 700, B05D 302, C23C 1640
US Classification:
427215
Abstract:
This invention relates to methods of preparing grinding media consisting essentially of sintered titanium dioxide (TiO. sub. 2) particles. The method involves preparing base TiO. sub. 2 particles, coating the base TiO. sub. 2 particles with at least one hydrous oxide, compressing the TiO. sub. 2 particles, and granulating the TiO. sub. 2 particles to form TiO. sub. 2 particles having substantially rounded edges. The invention further encompasses the resulting grinding media prepared by such methods and to methods of using such grinding media in media-milling particulate material such as titanium dioxide pigments.

Filed:
Dec 12, 2003
Appl. No.:
10/538356
Inventors:
Thomas Buller - Diamondhead MS, US
Stephen Lyke - Wilmington DE, US
Aaron Becker - Wilmington DE, US
Stephan De La Veaux - Wilmington DE, US
Russell Diemer - Wilmington DE, US
James Dunson Jr. - Newark DE, US
James Tilton - Landenberg PA, US
David Zimmerman - Wilmington DE, US
Stephen Hallock - Newark DE, US
International Classification:
C01B 7/00, B01J 8/04
US Classification:
423500000, 422196000, 422224000
Abstract:
The present invention relates to a process for recovering chlorine from a feed stream containing metal chlorides using a tubular reactor wherein a hot oxygen containing gas has an initial velocity such that the resulting velocity of the bulk gas formed from mixing the oxygen containing gas with the metal chloride feed stream and a scrubs feed stream is sufficient to remove wall deposits as fast as such deposits are formed.
