Transformer Core Comprising Groups Of Amorphous Steel Strips Wrapped About The Core Window

US Patent:
5329270, Jul 12, 1994
Filed:
Jun 26, 1992
Appl. No.:
7/904746
Inventors:
David R. Freeman - Hickory NC
Assignee:
General Electric Company - Malvern PA
International Classification:
H01F 2724, H01F 4102
US Classification:
336213
Abstract:
This transformer core comprises superposed groups of amorphous steel strip wrapped about the core window, each group comprising an inner section and an outer section disposed in superposed relationship, and each section comprising many thin layers of amorphous steel strip. Each of the layers in a section has a length dimension measured between the transversely-extending edges of the layer located at opposite ends of the section. The layers in the inner section of a group have substantially equal lengths, and the layers in the outer section of said group have substantially equal lengths of a greater value than the lengths of the layers in the inner section. At one end of each group the transversely-extending edges of all the layers in said group are substantially aligned to form a smooth edge. At the other end of the group (i) the transversely-extending edges of the layers in the inner section are disposed to form a beveled edge for the inner section, (ii) the transversely-extending edges of the layers in the outer section are disposed to form a beveled edge for the outer section, and (iii) the beveled edge of the outer section overlaps the beveled edge of the inner section.

Method For Making Packets Of Amorphous Metal Strip For Transformer-Core Manufacture

US Patent:
5191700, Mar 9, 1993
Filed:
Aug 1, 1991
Appl. No.:
7/739341
Inventors:
Willi Klappert - Hickory NC
David R. Freeman - Hickory NC
Assignee:
General Electric Company - Malvern PA
International Classification:
H01F 4102
US Classification:
29609
Abstract:
Certain transformer cores are manufactured by wrapping about an arbor packets of amorphous metal strip, each packet comprising a plurality of groups of strip, and each group comprising many thin layers of strip. This method of making such packets comprises: (a) providing composite strip comprising many thin layers of amorphous metal strip stacked in superposed relationship, (b) cutting said composite strip a first time to form a first multi-layer section of predetermined length, (c) cutting said composite strip a second time to form a second multi-layer section of predetermined length, (d) substantially aligning the first and second multi-layer sections to form from these sections one of said groups, and (e) carrying out the above cutting steps with blades capable of cutting only a predetermined maximum number of the above layers without causing the life of the blades to sharply drop, this maximum number being less than the number of layers in each group but greater than the number of layers cut in each of steps (b) and (c).

Apparatus For Making A Transformer Core Comprising Strips Of Amorphous Stell Wrapped Around The Core Window

US Patent:
5321883, Jun 21, 1994
Filed:
Oct 20, 1992
Appl. No.:
7/963779
Inventors:
Willi Klappert - Hickory NC
David R. Freeman - Hickory NC
Assignee:
General Electric Company - Schenectady NY
International Classification:
B23P 1904, H01F 304, B21C 4702
US Classification:
29729
Abstract:
This wrapping apparatus comprises a belt nester for wrapping stacks of thin amorphous steel strips about an arbor. The belt nester includes (a) a belt wrapped about the arbor and movable along its length to impart rotary motion to the arbor and (b) means for successively feeding individual ones of the stacks into the space between the belt and the arbor. The wrapping apparatus further comprises means defining a first substantially-flat surface upon which the stacks are supported as they are fed into the space between the belt and the arbor and additional means defining a second substantially-flat surface extending parallel to the first flat surface. Control means operates when a stack that is being wrapped on the arbor passes between said flat surfaces to bias one of the flat surfaces toward the other and to compress the stack between the two flat surfaces as the stack is wrapped. This compression removes wrinkles from the strips, removes air pockets from between the strips, and enables the stack to be more effectively guided by guide members at the longitudinal edges of the stack.

Method For Making Packets Of Amorphous Metal Strip For Transformer-Core Manufacture

US Patent:
5063654, Nov 12, 1991
Filed:
Dec 12, 1990
Appl. No.:
7/626213
Inventors:
Willi Klappert - Hickory NC
David R. Freeman - Hickory NC
Assignee:
General Electric Company - King of Prussia PA
International Classification:
H01F 4102
US Classification:
29609
Abstract:
This method of making packets for transformer-core manufacture comprises: (i) providing a composite strip comprising many thin layers of amorphous steel strip, (ii) advancing the leading end of the composite strip forward, (iii) cutting the composite strip at a location spaced rearwardly of the leading edge of the strip, thereby detaching a first section of multi-layer strip and creating a new leading end just behind the cutting location, and (iv) then clamping the detached section to a supporting surface. Then the following steps (a) and (b) are carried out. (a) The new leading end of the composite strip is advanced forward, and the strip is cut at a location spaced rearwardly of the new leading edge, thus detaching an additional section of multi-layer strip and creating another new leading end just behind the latter cutting location. (b) Then, the additional section is advanced over the top of the immediately-preceding detached section, the immediately-preceding detached section is unclamped, and the additional detached section is clamped to the supporting surface atop the immediately-preceding section. Thereafter, steps corresponding to (a) and (b) are repeated with respect to each suceeding new leading end or section until a predetermined number of sections of multi-layer strip have been detached and stacked upon said supporting surface to from a packet.

Method For Making Packets Of Amorphous Steel Strip For Transformer Core Manufacture

US Patent:
5347706, Sep 20, 1994
Filed:
Jun 26, 1992
Appl. No.:
7/904428
Inventors:
Willi Klappert - Hickory NC
David R. Freeman - Hickory NC
Assignee:
General Electric Company - Schenectady NY
International Classification:
H01F 4102
US Classification:
29609
Abstract:
This method of making packets of amorphous metal strip adapted to be wrapped about the arbor of a transformer-core-making machine comprises providing first and second composite strips, each comprising many thin layers of amorphous metal strip stacked in superposed relationship. The composite strips have leading ends that are located in initial positions (i) axially spaced from each other at the start of a packet-making operation and (ii) at opposite ends of a stacking zone where the packets are built up during a packet-making operation. The composite strips are cut to detach first sections of strip from the first composite strip and to detach second sections of strip from the second composite strip; and the detached sections are axially advanced forwardly of the respective composite strips from which they are detached into said stacking zone. The second sections are stacked in alternating relationship upon the first sections in the stacking zone. We utilize for advancing each of the first sections into the stacking zone first transport means that is moved in a first-strip forward direction during said advancing of each of the first sections and is returned to a home position in preparation for each succeeding advancing operation of a first section.
