Multi-Axis Microprocess Or Docking Mechanism

US Patent:
6229708, May 8, 2001
Filed:
Mar 25, 1999
Appl. No.:
9/276336
Inventors:
John Saunders Corbin - Austin TX
David Allen Hall - Austin TX
Kenneth Carl Larsen - Georgetown TX
Mark Wayne Mueller - Austin TX
Peter Matthew Thomsen - Austin TX
Assignee:
International Business Machines Corporation - Armonk NY
International Classification:
H05K 700
US Classification:
361728
Abstract:
A mechanism has a subassembly that contains a microprocessor. The mechanism allows the microprocessor to be easily installed through frontal or rear access into a rack drawer and subsequently docked into a receiving assembly. The docking mechanism is multi-axis in that installation of the subassembly occurs along a single axis, but docking of the microprocessor occurs along an axis that is normal to the installation axis. Actuation of the installation mechanism is accomplished with a front-to-rear motion which sequentially provides a power connection to the microprocessor and displaces it in a vertical motion. This vertical motion registers and mates the microprocessor with the assembly. The microprocessor is preloaded in its final latched position to restrain it from shock and vibration events while supporting the assembly in a fixed and stable position.

Solenoid Impact Print Hammer With Uniform Free Flight Time

US Patent:
4407193, Oct 4, 1983
Filed:
Jun 16, 1980
Appl. No.:
6/159702
Inventors:
David A. Hall - Austin TX
George P. Olson - Austin TX
Assignee:
International Business Machines Corporation - Armonk NY
International Classification:
B41J 792
US Classification:
101 9301
Abstract:
In an impact printer including a print wheel having a plurality of selectable character type bearing elements for respectively printing a plurality of characters, said print wheel being rotatable for selectively positioning selected type elements in successive print positions, impact means impellable against the selected elements to drive said elements against the printing medium and means for impelling the impact means against said selected type element, the present invention provides the improvement comprising the combination of means for sensing the flight time of the impelled impact means until impact by sensing variations in the velocity of said impact means, means for comparing the sensed flight time to a predetermined ideal flight time, and means for selectively varying the amplitude of the current to the impelling means to adjust the sensed flight time to equal the ideal flight time.

Wind Detecting And Alerting Apparatus

US Patent:
5265469, Nov 30, 1993
Filed:
Mar 10, 1992
Appl. No.:
7/848735
Inventors:
David R. Hall - Austin TX
International Classification:
G01W 100
US Classification:
7317015
Abstract:
A wind detecting and alerting apparatus includes a wind-sensing member, a support member, and an annular member, all of which are electrically-conductive. The apparatus also includes a support platform, and an electrical alarm circuit. The wind-sensing member has an elongated arm, a wind vane mounted on the arm and capable of sensing wind direction, and a wind deflector mounted on the arm and capable of sensing wind velocity. The support member mounts the elongated arm of the wind-sensing member to undergo rotational movement in response to the sensing of wind direction by the wind vane and pivotal movement in response to the sensing of wind velocity by the wind deflector. The support platform mounts the support member in an upright orientation and mounts the annular member concentrically about and spaced outwardly from the upright support member and below the rotational path of the wind-sensing member. The electrical alarm circuit is electrically connected between the upright support member and the annular member and is normally in an open switch condition. The circuit is capable of changing to a closed switch condition upon pivotal movement of the wind-sensing member through a sufficient displacement to make electrical contact with the annular member in response to sensing of wind velocity above a preset magnitude.
