High Speed Transport System

US Patent:
5608757, Mar 4, 1997
Filed:
Jun 3, 1994
Appl. No.:
8/253339
Inventors:
David M. Smith - Plano TX
Oscar A. Tovar - Plano TX
Assignee:
DSC Communications Corporation - Plano TX
International Classification:
H03H 730
US Classification:
375229
Abstract:
A high speed signal transport system (10) provides data transmission across a balanced channel (14). The balanced channel (14) carries differential signals from the output of a differential transmitter (12). An equalizer (18) compensates for distortion in the balanced channel in order to reduce timing jitter of the signal. The signal is applied to the input of a differential receiver (20) which exploits the precise quantization threshold inherent in differential data to accurately convert the signal to digital data. The differential receiver (20) also employs a known frequency reference along with digital transition detection to rephase the digital data to the local clock. No duty-cycle limitation is placed on the signal carried by the balanced channel (14) and therefore the differential transmitter (12) and differential receiver (20) are not required to encode the signal. Because the signal-to-noise ratio seen by the differential receiver (20) is ample for accurate quantization, the equalizer (18) is optimized for jitter reduction in order to obviate the need for analog retiming circuits.

Circuitry For Retiming A Received Data Signal

US Patent:
5930311, Jul 27, 1999
Filed:
Oct 10, 1996
Appl. No.:
8/731154
Inventors:
Gregory S. Lovelace - Sachse TX
Amanda G. Noe - Plano TX
David M. Smith - Plano TX
Assignee:
Alcatel USA Sourcing, L.P. - Plano TX
International Classification:
H04L 700
US Classification:
375354
Abstract:
A circuitry (10) is provided for automatically retiming a received synchronous data signal to a local clock. The circuitry (10) includes a first flip-flop (20) operable to register at least one synchronous data signal in response to a receive clock signal and to generate at least one data output signal. An OR gate (26) receives a data latch enable signal and a local clock signal. The local clock signal is frequency coherent with the receive clock signal. The OR gate (26) produces an enable signal. A latch (28) is coupled to the OR gate (26) for receiving the enable signal and in cascading arrangement with the first flip-flop (20). The latch (28) latches the data output signal on the falling edge of the local clock signal when the data latch enable signal is low. The latch (28) holds the latched data output signal as long as the local clock signal and the data latch enable signal are low. When either the local clock signal or the data latch enable signal is high, the latch (28) passes the data output signal.

System And Method Of Autodialing For Long-Distance Access

US Patent:
6891944, May 10, 2005
Filed:
Sep 8, 2000
Appl. No.:
09/657917
Inventors:
David Matthew Smith - Plano TX, US
International Classification:
H04M003/42
US Classification:
37922114, 37935501, 379 9326
Abstract:
A telephone accessory that is connected to a subscriber's telephone line as an extension, and monitors the line for the initiation of a call from any telephone set. The invention detects a call initiation by determining that a telephone set has seized the line without ring voltage being present immediately beforehand. If the first digit dialed by the subscriber is a “1”, the invention immediately dials the remainder of a long-distance access code, without the initial “1”, followed by a “1” which signifies a long distance number. This burst of dialed digits takes a short time, after which the subscriber continues to dial the area code and number as normal. The effect for the subscriber is to manually dial a normal long ditance nimber as 1+area code+number, while this invention takes advantage of the fact that long distance access codes begin with “1” and automatically inserts the desired code.

Method And System For Combining A Conversion Between Time-Division Multiplexed Digital Signals And Packetized Digital Signals With A Switching System Interface

US Patent:
2006008, Apr 27, 2006
Filed:
Nov 29, 2005
Appl. No.:
11/289179
Inventors:
David Smith - Plano TX, US
International Classification:
H04M 3/00, H04J 3/16, H04M 5/00
US Classification:
370467000, 379244000
Abstract:
The present invention is a switching system interface providing conversion between time-division multiplexed digital signals and packetized digital signals used to bypass a common control and switch matrix of a class 5 digital switch. The switching system interface includes a network interface for terminating a digital transmission facility that is part of a network architecture. In addition, the interface includes a line/trunk interface, compatible with the internal signals used to operate the line/trunk interface of the class 5 digital switching system and a switch, connected to the network interface and to the line/trunk interface, for routing data between network interfaces and line/trunk interface. The interface also converts the data between time-division multiplexed digital signals and packetized digital signals.

David Smith - Plano TX, US
International Classification:
H04M003/00, H04M005/00
US Classification:
379/244000
Abstract:
A method for bypassing the common control and switch matrix of a class 5 digital switch, comprising providing a means to convert the signals and protocols used with the line/trunk frames associated with the class 5 digital switch to those used by the remote end of a DLC; providing network interfaces for one or more digital transmission facilities that make up the remote end of a DLC; and providing a means to couple the line/trunk frames with the switching system interface. A switching system interface comprising one or more network interfaces for terminating digital transmission facilities; one or more interfaces for coupling to line/trunk frames of a digital switch; a time-slot assignment means for connecting time slots of the digital transmission facilities to those of the line/trunk frames; and a call processing means for coordinating call setup and teardown between the DLC local terminal and the line/trunk frames, and for managing the time-slot assignment means to complete calls.

Blanket Resist To Protect Active Side Of Semiconductor

US Patent:
2008007, Mar 27, 2008
Filed:
Sep 27, 2006
Appl. No.:
11/528255
Inventors:
Scott Cuong Nguyen - Garland TX, US
Keith David Fenstermacher - Murphy TX, US
David Michael Smith - Plano TX, US
Courtney Michael Hazelton - Richardson TX, US
International Classification:
H01L 21/471
US Classification:
438694, 438954, 438786
Abstract:
Yield loss in semiconductor processing is mitigated by forming a resist over an active side of a semiconductor workpiece or wafer, as well as around the edge of the wafer. The resist mitigates the creation of contaminants, such as nitride flakes, for example, that can develop when an oxide, nitride, oxide (ONO) layer is removed from the back or in-active side of the wafer. In the absence of the resist, such flakes may migrate to the front or active side of the wafer and cause defects to form therein, which can result in yield loss.
