Bi-Centered Drill Bit Having Improved Drilling Stability, Mud Hydraulics And Resistance To Cutter Damage

US Patent:
6464024, Oct 15, 2002
Filed:
May 16, 2001
Appl. No.:
09/858380
Inventors:
Timothy P. Beaton - The Woodlands TX
David Truax - Houston TX
Assignee:
Smith International, Inc. - Houston TX
International Classification:
E21B 1040
US Classification:
175391, 175399
Abstract:
A bi-center drill bit includes pilot and reaming blades affixed to a body at azimuthally spaced locations. The blades have PDC cutters attached at selected positions. In one aspect, the pilot blades form a section having length along the bit axis less than about 80 percent of a diameter of the section. In another aspect, selected pilot blades and corresponding reaming blades are formed into single spiral structures. In another aspect, shapes and positions of the blades and inserts are selected so that lateral forces exerted by the reaming and the pilot sections are balanced as a single structure. Lateral forces are preferably balanced to within 10 percent of the total axial force on the bit. In another aspect, the center of mass of the bit is located less than about 2. 5 percent of the diameter of the bit from the axis of rotation.

10/057771
Inventors:
David Truax - Houston TX, US
Douglas Rock - Houston TX, US
Graham Mensa-Wilmot - Houston TX, US
International Classification:
E21B010/00
US Classification:
175/376000, 175/378000, 076/108200
Abstract:
A roller cone drill bit having selected left hand walk is disclosed. The bit includes a bit body adapted to couple to a drill string, and a plurality of legs depending from the bit body. Each leg has a roller cone rotatably mounted thereon. Each cone includes a plurality of cutting elements thereon. At least one cone has a nose point of its profile displaced radially inward with respect to a nose point of the profile of the other cones. A roller cone drill bit having selected right hand walk is also disclosed. The bit include a bit body adapted to couple to a drill string, and a plurality of legs depending from the bit body. Each leg has a roller cone rotatably mounted thereon, each cone including a plurality of cutting elements thereon defining a profile. At least one cone has a nose point of the profile displaced radially outward with respect to a nose point of the profile of the other cones.

Matrix Hard Facing By Lost Wax Process

US Patent:
5944128, Aug 31, 1999
Filed:
Feb 6, 1998
Appl. No.:
9/019877
Inventors:
David Truax - Houston TX
Douglas Caraway - Kingwood TX
Stephen M. Evans - Standish, GB
Andrew Murdock - Stonehouse, GB
Assignee:
Camco International (UK) Limited - Stonehouse
International Classification:
E21B 1008
US Classification:
175374
Abstract:
A drill bit comprises a main body part having a shank for connection to a drill string, an end face, an internal passage for supplying drilling fluid to the end face, a number of blades extending from the end face outwardly and longitudinally of the central axis of rotation of the bit, and a number of cutters mounted on each said blade. Each blade comprises a central metal core at least partly surrounded by solid infiltrated matrix material. A method of manufacturing such a drill bit includes the steps of forming a main body part from metal, applying to the outer surface of the main body part a coating layer of wax which liquefies at elevated temperature, applying to the coated body part mold-forming material to provide a self-supporting mold surrounding the coated body part, and raising the temperature of the body and surrounding mold sufficiently to liquefy the coating material. The liquefied coating is then drained from the mold, and the cavities left by the coating material are packed with powdered matrix material, which is then infiltrated with a binder alloy at elevated temperature to form a solid infiltrated matrix layer, on the bit body part, corresponding to the layer of wax previously applied.
