Apparatus For Monitoring Cardiovascular Regulation Using Heart Rate Power Spectral Analysis

US Patent:
4832038, May 23, 1989
Filed:
Jan 20, 1987
Appl. No.:
7/009099
Inventors:
Makoto R. Arai - Chicago IL
David Gordon - Chicago IL
Laura E. McAlpine - Chicago IL
Assignee:
The Board of Trustees of University of Illinois - Urbana IL
International Classification:
A61B 502
US Classification:
128670
Abstract:
Apparatus for heart rate fluctuation power spectrum analysis obtains an electrocardiogram signal from an electrocardiograph machine and a respiratory rate signal from an electroplethysmograph machine. These signals are processed by a data acquisition system to provide output suitable for heart rate fluctuation power spectrum analysis by a mini-micro-computer. Data manipulation includes correction of artifacts by substituting an appropriate heartbeat interval for detected heartbeat intervals for which the variance exceeds a preselected range of slewing rates. Trending of data and overlapping data analysis increase the analytical capabilities of the apparatus. Methods of treatment for conditions manifested by abnormalities in a heart rate fluctuation power spectrum involve applying treatments when spectral abnormalities are observed. Specific abnormalities indicating the need for treatment include: a level below about 0. 1 (beats/min. ). sup.

Inhibitors And Disassemblers Of Fibrillogenesis

US Patent:
2003013, Jul 10, 2003
Filed:
Mar 20, 2002
Appl. No.:
10/103658
Inventors:
David Gordon - Chicago IL, US
Stephen Meredith - Chicago IL, US
International Classification:
A61K038/17, C07K014/435, G01N033/53
US Classification:
530/350000, 514/012000, 435/007100
Abstract:
Methods and compositions are presented that inhibit fibril formation and/or bring about disassembly of pre-formed fibrils. Compositions include peptides with short -strands with two faces: one that can bind to -amyloids through hydrogen bonds, and one which blocks propagation of hydrogen bonding needed to form fibrils. Thus, short congeners of the fibril protein containing N-methyl amino acids or esters are provided for the inhibition of fibril formation and for the disassembly of pre-existing or pre-formed fibrils. Specific aspects address -amyloid fibrils; prion mediated fibrils; Huntington protein fibrils. Methods for screening for potential fibril inhibitors and disassemblers, diagnostic analysis and treatments are provided.
