Assignee:
Tayco Developments, Inc. - North Tonawanda NY
International Classification:
B63G 1300
US Classification:
114 1
Abstract:
A system for mounting a device on board ship which experiences normal vibrations of a predetermined frequency and which may be subjected to high intensity shock forces including a plurality of preloaded liquid springs operable in tension and compression and oriented in a truss configuration between the deck of the ship and the device, the casings of the liquid springs having a natural frequency in excess of the normal shipboard vibrational frequencies and by virtue of being preloaded providing rigid linkages for transmitting normal shipboard vibrational frequencies to the device, the preloading being of such a magnitude to permit the liquid springs to yield in either tension or compression when the ship is subjected to high intensity shock forces such as weapons effect pulses, and the liquid springs resetting the device to its normal position relative to the ship after termination of the high intensity shock forces.

Assignee:
Tayco Developments, Inc. - North Tonawanda NY
International Classification:
F16F 949, F16M 1300
US Classification:
188280
Abstract:
A frictionless hydraulic damper including a cylinder having end walls mounting the opposite ends of a shaft with a clearance in labyrinth seals, bellows seals between each end wall and the portions of the shaft extending beyond each end wall, a piston head on the shaft within the cylinder, hydraulic fluid in the cylinder and in both bellows seals, an orifice construction located relative to the piston head for permitting flow of hydraulic fluid past the piston head to produce damping, and a conduit in the shaft for effecting communication between the two bellows. The damper as described above also functions as a snubber by including a valve construction which selectively closes the orifice construction.

Negative Stiffness Device And Method

US Patent:
2013011, May 16, 2013
Filed:
Nov 9, 2012
Appl. No.:
13/673257
Inventors:
Michael C. Constantinou - Amherst NY, US
Andrei M. Reinhorn - Williamsville NY, US
Apostolos A. Sarlis - Buffalo NY, US
Douglas Taylor - N. Tonawanda NY, US
David A. Lee - Santa Monica CA, US
Satish Nagarajaiah - Sugar Land TX, US
Dharma Theja R. Pasala - Houston TX, US
International Classification:
E04H 9/02, E04B 1/98
US Classification:
521671, 527413
Abstract:
A negative stiffness device and method for seismic protection of a structure is described. In one embodiment, the device has an anchor frame and a movement frame laterally translatable relative to the anchor frame. The anchor frame and movement frame have respective extension portions. A linkage is pivotably connected to the extension portion of the anchor frame. A compressed spring has a first end is attached to the extension portion of the movement frame and a second end attached to the linkage. The compressed spring has a spring force. In a rest state, the compressed spring does not apply a lateral force to the movement frame. In an engaged state, the compressed spring is configured to apply a lateral force to displace the movement frame in a lateral direction of a seismic load. The spring force is amplified by the linkage when the movement frame is laterally displaced to an amplification point.
