Abstract:
An oral airway consists of an elongate tubular member having a leading distal end and a proximal end, the leading distal end leading the elongate tubular member as it is inserted into the mouth and pharynx of a patient. An opening at the leading distal end of the elongate tubular member is inclined so that a posterior portion of the distal portion extends beyond an anterior portion of the distal end. A flexible tip portion extends distally beyond the opening to aid in insertion of the oral airway into the mouth and pharynx of a patient. The tip is configured to flex toward the opening as it abuts tissue within the mouth and pharynx of a patient.

Abstract:
A tubular assembly having a plurality of lumens is configured for insertion into the mouth and throat of a patient with a proximal end of the tubular assembly extending from the patient's mouth and a distal end of the tubular assembly extending into the patient's esophagus. The tubular assembly further includes a transition portion near the tubular assembly. The transition portion is configured to transition from a relatively radially large proximal end to a relatively radially small distal end, with the relatively radially small distal end being in communication with at least one of the lumens. The relatively radially large proximal end is configured to abut the aryepiglottic folds of the patient to arrest insertion of the tubular assembly with the relatively radially small distal end of the transition portion extending into the patient's esophagus. A method of providing breathing assist includes inserting the tubular assembly into the mouth and throat of a patient with the relatively radially large proximal end abutting the aryepiglottic folds and the distal end of the transition portion extending into the patient's esophagus.

An oral airway which is inserted into the pharynx of a patient through the mouth while the patient is undergoing general anesthesia or is undergoing respiratory treatment such as is carried out with cardiopulmonary resuscitation. The oral airway includes a curved hollow, tubular longitudinally extending body member. The body member has a distal end portion for insertion into the patient's mouth and pharynx and a proximal end portion for location at the mouth of the patient. The distal end portion of the body member of the oral airway is extended and shaped so as to be operative to seat deep in the patient's hypo-pharynx and surround the patient's epiglottis and glottis, thereby to hold the patient's soft tissue away from the air channel opening of the patient.

Abstract:
A patient airway bite block which can be used together with laryngeal mask airways (LMAs), oral endotracheal tubes, and similar patient airways. The bite block includes a bite block portion which is wedge-shaped and defines a posterior portion and an anterior portion and has upper and lower non-incisor teeth engagement surfaces. The wedge-shaped bite block portion is angled such that the non-incisor teeth engagement surfaces gradually become farther apart in a direction from the posterior portion toward the anterior portion, thereby to hold a patient's incisors apart when the bite block is positioned in the patient's mouth at one side thereof. At least one pair of spaced apart flanges is provided. The flanges extend from the bite block portion and are dimensioned to be positioned between the patient's non-incisor teeth and cheek and on the tongue side of the patient's non-incisor teeth, respectively. The flanges serve to retain the bite block in place in the patient's mouth.

Abstract:
A patient arm support comprises a first elongate resilient segment extending along an axis having a top and a bottom surface, the bottom surface being configured to rest upon a substantially planar surface and the top surface being configured to support an upper portion of the patient's arm. A second elongate resilient segment extends along the axis and also has a top and a bottom surface, the bottom surface being configured to rest upon a substantially planar surface and the top surface being configured to support a lower portion of the patient's arm. In one embodiment a void provides axial separation between the top surfaces of the first and second resilient segments. The void is configured to receive the ulnar nerve at the elbow of the patient without the ulnar nerve contacting a surrounding surface. In another embodiment the second elongate resilient segment is inclined upward as it extends away from the first elongate resilient segment. In another embodiment a lengthwise channel is provided in the top surface of the second elongate resilient segment to receive and secure a patient's hand in a neutral position. Embodiments may include combinations of these features.
