Energy Storage Device Configured To Discharge Energy In Response To Unsafe Conditions

US Patent:
7592776, Sep 22, 2009
Filed:
Sep 8, 2004
Appl. No.:
10/935869
Inventors:
Hisashi Tsukamoto - Saugus CA, US
Clay Kishiyama - Burbank CA, US
David Comarow - Las Vegas NV, US
Assignee:
Quallion LLC - Sylmar CA
International Classification:
H01M 10/46
US Classification:
320136
Abstract:
A method, device and system is disclosed for rapidly and safely discharging remaining energy stored in an electrochemical battery in the event of an internal short circuit or other fault. In its best mode of implementation, if a sensor detects one or more parameters such as battery temperature or pressure , exceeding a predetermined threshold value , the terminals of the battery or cell are intentionally short-circuited external to the battery through a low or near zero resistance load which rapidly drains energy from the battery. Heat generated by such rapid drain is absorbed by a heat absorbing material such as an endothermic phase-change material like paraffin. The rate energy is drained via the external discharge load may be controlled with an electronic circuit responsive to factors such as state of charge and battery temperature. Devices such as inductive charging coils , piezoelectric and Peltier devices , may also be used as emergency energy discharge loads. Heat absorption material may be used to protect adjacent issue in medically-implanted devices.

Temporary Birefringent Color Image Apparatus And Method

US Patent:
8233099, Jul 31, 2012
Filed:
Apr 22, 2011
Appl. No.:
13/092796
Inventors:
Austine Wood Comarow - Las Vegas NV, US
David Comarow - Las Vegas NV, US
Rufus Butler Seder - Arlington MA, US
International Classification:
G02F 1/1335
US Classification:
349 5, 349 10
Abstract:
Disclosed is an apparatus and method for making temporary colorful birefringent displays. In its preferred embodiment, cellophane is laminated between self-adherent vinyl sheets with non-water soluble adhesive and desired shapes are cut therefrom. Plane polarizing filter is similarly laminated between sheets of self-adherent vinyl. One of the polarizer laminations is adhered to a gloss surface such as a window. Shapes cut from the cellophane-vinyl laminations are adhered to the polarizer lamination. Colors created by the polarized light passing through the birefringent cellophane laminations are viewed through a polarizing analyzer which can be a second lamination of polarizer between self-adherent vinyl sheets and placed over the completed design, or through analyzers held separately from the design such as polarized glasses or hand held viewers. Transmissive and reflective and transflective types are disclosed. A less-resilient but less expensive version using low-tack adhesive in place of surface-adherent vinyl is also described.

Optical Toy

US Patent:
8582063, Nov 12, 2013
Filed:
Jun 20, 2012
Appl. No.:
13/507316
Inventors:
Austine Wood Comarow - Las Vegas NV, US
Rufus Butker Seder - Arlington MA, US
David Comarow - Las Vegas NV, US
International Classification:
G02F 1/1333, G02F 1/1335, A63H 33/04
US Classification:
349122, 349 96, 446 85
Abstract:
Disclosed is a toy comprising polarizing filters and birefringent film cut into shapes used to make temporary colorful birefringent designs. The birefringent film (or, alternatively, the polarizing filter) is coated with non-water soluble, non-hygroscopic low-tack or ultra-low-tack adhesive so that changeable designs can be assembled on the polarizing filter and viewed through polarized spectacles or a polarizing filter. The polarizing filters are retained in rings that can be nested and rotated in relation to each other, or movably attached to each other with magnetic attachments. An embodiment is also disclosed which makes use of the polarized light emitted from certain LCD display devices so that they can be used as a work surface to make changeable birefringent designs. Such an implementation may also use applications executed by or stored on the device to provide design outlines.
