Non-Aqueous Solventless Polyester Varnish

US Patent:
4752533, Jun 21, 1988
Filed:
Jan 9, 1987
Appl. No.:
7/002057
Inventors:
Daniel R. Sassano - Monroeville PA
Assignee:
Westinghouse Electric Corp. - Pittsburgh PA
International Classification:
C08L 6706
US Classification:
428480
Abstract:
Disclosed is a method of making a non-aqueous solventless polyester varnish. A composition is prepared which comprises about one mole of maleic anhydride, about 0. 25 to about 0. 35 mole of dicyclopentadience, about 0. 65 to about 0. 75 mole of ethylene glycol, and about 0. 35 to about 0. 45 mole of a polyol. The composition is heated to about 150. degree. to about 170. degree. C. , and then to about 200. degree. to about 210. degree. C. , which condenses out water, forms an unsaturated polyester and, reduces the acid number to less than about 45. The composition is cooled to a temperature below about 150. degree. C. , and about 0. 1 to about 0. 5% of an inhibitor is added to said composition, followed by an unsaturated aromatic compound which can be styrene, vinyl toluene, or mixtures thereof, in a ratio of about 20 to about 40 pbw unsaturated aromatic compound to about 60 to about 80 pbw unsaturated polyester. When it is desirable to use the composition, 0. 5 to about 1.

Liquid Modified Epoxy Resins And Their Preparation

US Patent:
3974113, Aug 10, 1976
Filed:
Dec 28, 1971
Appl. No.:
5/213164
Inventors:
Daniel R. Sassano - Monroeville PA
Leonard E. Edelman - Pittsburgh PA
Assignee:
Westinghouse Electric Corporation - Pittsburgh PA
International Classification:
C08J 302
US Classification:
260 18EP
Abstract:
Liquid modified epoxy resins are prepared by reacting a drying oil with a diepoxide in the presence of certain alkali or alkaline earth metal compounds, preferably a lithium soap such as lithium ricinoleate. The drying oil may be modified by reacting it with maleic acid, maleic anhydride, or fumaric acid to increase the drying rate.

Method Of Making A High Temperature Capability Water Soluble Polyester Insulating Resin Solution

US Patent:
4220752, Sep 2, 1980
Filed:
Aug 14, 1978
Appl. No.:
5/933334
Inventors:
Daniel R. Sassano - Monroeville PA
William H. Fink - Manor PA
Assignee:
Westinghouse Electric Corp. - Pittsburgh PA
International Classification:
C08G 6320
US Classification:
528289
Abstract:
A high temperature capability, water soluble polyester resin solution is made by esterifying an admixture comprising: an organic, aliphatic dihydric alcohol, an organic, polycarboxylic acid containing major portions of aromatic tricarboxylic acid, an organic, aliphatic dicarboxylic acid, and tris (2 hydroxy alkyl) isocyanurate; and then adding an amount of organic solvent effective to provide a solution; wherein the esterification is continued until the acid value drops to between about 35 to about 45 and wherein the mole ratio of OH/COOH=1. 1 to 2.

Filed:
Mar 24, 1982
Appl. No.:
6/361212
Inventors:
Daniel R. Sassano - Monroeville PA
Assignee:
Westinghouse Electric Corp. - Pittsburgh PA
International Classification:
B05D 512, B32B 1508
US Classification:
29605
Abstract:
A bondable electrical conductor is made of an adherent insulating resinous first layer, directly covered by an adhesive layer consisting essentially of the uncatalyzed mixture of epoxy resin, having an epoxy equivalent weight of from about 250 to about 750, and a phenoxy resin.
