Two-Part Structural Adhesive Systems And Laminates Incorporating The Same

US Patent:
6730411, May 4, 2004
Filed:
Feb 7, 2002
Appl. No.:
10/072696
Inventors:
Daniel Keith Doe - Roslindale MA
Donald Edmond Gosiewski - Peabody MA
Assignee:
Illinois Tool Works Inc. - Glenview IL
International Classification:
B32B 900
US Classification:
428500, 428522, 428688, 428689
Abstract:
A two-part adhesive systems exhibiting improved fixture and open times are disclosed. In one embodiment, the system includes (a) an adhesive part being a mixture formed from (I) an ethylenically unsaturated monomer, (II) a metal molybdate, (III) a metal salt of an ethylenically unsaturated carboxylic acid in an amount less than 3 weight percent, and (IV) an ethylenically unsaturated carboxylic acid, and (b) an activator part which includes a free radical generator. In another embodiment, the system includes the above-described adhesive part substantially free of a metal salt of an ethylenically unsaturated carboxylic acid. Curable adhesives and laminates prepared with the two-part system are also disclosed.

Acrylic Adhesives For Metal Bonding Applications

US Patent:
7776963, Aug 17, 2010
Filed:
May 3, 2005
Appl. No.:
11/120789
Inventors:
Xiaobin Wang - North Andover MA, US
Daniel K. Doe - Hyde Park MA, US
Patricia M. Savory - Danvers MA, US
Kenneth A. Lambert - Billerica MA, US
Assignee:
Illinois Tool Works Inc. - Glenview IL
International Classification:
C09J 9/00, C09J 4/02, C09J 11/06, C09J 11/08, C09J 133/06, C09J 153/02, C09J 5/04
US Classification:
525 71, 525 83, 525 85, 525 87, 525 93, 525 94, 525259, 525268, 525308, 525309, 524560
Abstract:
Adhesive formulations having acrylate monomer or methacrylate monomer, or mixtures thereof, and having a reducing agent and an initiator (e. g. , peroxide). The formulations may include a chelating agent solution to improve storage stability and other properties. Further, the mole ratio of the initiator to the reducing agent may be adjusted to control weight loss of the adhesives during cure. Polyvinyl acetate or its derivatives may also be employed in the adhesive formulations to reduce weight loss during cure. Moreover, certain embodiments of the formulations include a toughening-agent copolymer having a glass transition temperature (of at least one domain) that is lower than −50° C. (−58° F. ). These toughening-agent copolymers may be added to the adhesive formulations to improve impact strength and other properties of the cured adhesives at lower temperatures, e. g. , −40° C.
