Heat-Treated Fluorocarbon Sulfonamide Cation Exchange Membrane And Process Therefor

US Patent:
4168216, Sep 18, 1979
Filed:
Sep 27, 1978
Appl. No.:
5/946172
Inventors:
Samuel F. Burkhardt - Painesville OH
Daniel E. Maloney - Hockessin DE
Assignee:
Diamond Shamrock Corporation - Cleveland OH
E. I. Du Pont de Nemours and Company - Wilmington DE
International Classification:
C25B 120, C25B 126, C25B 1308
US Classification:
204 98
Abstract:
An ion exchange membrane of a fluorinated polymer which contains sulfonyl groups, wherein the sulfonyl groups on one surface of the membrane are in the form of N-monosubstituted sulfonamide groups formed from a di- or polyamine, is treated by heating at a temperature of 100. degree. to 160. degree. C. for a time of at least 15 minutes. The resulting membrane is useful as the membrane in a chloralkali electrolysis cell, and permits operation of such cells at high current efficiency over extended periods of time.

Electrochemical Cell

US Patent:
4444638, Apr 24, 1984
Filed:
May 5, 1982
Appl. No.:
6/374969
Inventors:
Daniel E. Maloney - Hockessin DE
Assignee:
E. I. Du Pont de Nemours and Company - Wilmington DE
International Classification:
C25B 900, C25B 1308
US Classification:
204252
Abstract:
A process and cell for electrolysis of alkali metal halides, especially sodium chloride, are described, wherein the anolyte and catholyte compartments are separated by a fluorinated ion-exchange membrane whose surface facing the catholyte compartment is of a polymer having carboxylic functionality and which has a roughness which does not exceed 1. 5 microns. Such a cell and process operate at high current efficiency, low voltage and low power consumption.
