Automated Discovery Aggregation And Organization Of Subject Area Discussions

US Patent:
8626768, Jan 7, 2014
Filed:
Jan 6, 2010
Appl. No.:
12/683078
Inventors:
Peter Richard Bailey - Kirkland WA, US
Daniel Robert Schwartz - Seattle WA, US
Assignee:
Microsoft Corporation - Redmond WA
International Classification:
G06F 7/00, G06F 17/30
US Classification:
707738
Abstract:
An aggregation service aggregates discussions of events and topics within a given subject area using seed search queries, seed URLs, and/or search engine data. A subject area is selected and a set of seed search queries and/or seed URLs relevant to that subject area are manually generated. The set of seed search queries and/or seed URLs are used to identify URLs containing content relevant to the subject area. The URLs are crawled at given intervals to identify content items, which are analyzed using a classifier to identify content items relevant to the subject area. The content items are grouped into clusters surrounding events and/or topics within the subject area. The various clusters are ranked against one another to facilitate ordering clusters for presentation to end-users.

Blanket For Pyrolysis Or Drying Of Biomass

US Patent:
2014007, Mar 20, 2014
Filed:
May 14, 2012
Appl. No.:
14/115060
Inventors:
Kenneth B. Faires - Seattle WA, US
Daniel T. Schwartz - Seattle WA, US
Gregory M. Newbloom - Seattle WA, US
Jeffrey J. Richards - Seattle WA, US
Michael S. Noon - Seattle WA, US
Jenny L. Knoth - Olympia WA, US
Assignee:
University of Washington through its Center for Commercialization - Seattle WA
International Classification:
C10B 45/00
US Classification:
44605, 2022671, 202269
Abstract:
The disclosed embodiments are operable to produce biochar from a biomass or to dry a biomass through controlled heating. While prior art technologies are stationary enclosures, the embodiments provided herein are based on a portable, flexible laminated blanket that is draped over a biomass (e.g., a wood slash pile). In this way, the blanket functions as a portable and reusable kiln for pyrolyzing biomass into biochar or drying biomass.

Electrochemical Micromanufacturing System And Method

US Patent:
7615141, Nov 10, 2009
Filed:
Oct 1, 2004
Appl. No.:
10/574552
Inventors:
Daniel T. Schwartz - Seattle WA, US
John D. Whitaker - Seattle WA, US
Assignee:
University of Washington - Seattle WA
International Classification:
C25D 5/02
US Classification:
205133, 205118, 204224 R
Abstract:
An electrochemical printing system () and method are disclosed having a printer head () that expels a small jet of electrolyte () towards a conductive substrate () to facilitate electrodeposition or removal of material from the substrate. In an embodiment of the invention the printer head includes a plurality of individually addressable electrodes (), each electrode having a channel therethrough and wherein the electrodes are much larger than the electrolyte jet outlet. The printer head includes means for inhibiting cross talk between electrodes. For example, the printer head may include a plenum () and a nonconductive cross-talk inhibition layer () upstream of the electrodes. A resolution defining layer () having small apertures () is provided at the distal end of the printer head.

Efficient Use Of Computational Resources For Interleaving

US Patent:
8266141, Sep 11, 2012
Filed:
Dec 9, 2010
Appl. No.:
12/964346
Inventors:
Filip Radlinski - Vancouver, CA
Nick Craswell - Seattle WA, US
Peter Bailey - Kirkland WA, US
Daniel Schwartz - Seattle WA, US
Aidan Crook - Bellevue WA, US
Likhita Krishnamurthy - Seattle WA, US
Assignee:
Microsoft Corporation - Redmond WA
International Classification:
G06F 17/30
US Classification:
707723, 707748
Abstract:
Methods and computer-readable media are provided for improving the efficiency of the interleaving process. Once it is determined that a search query is to be used in an interleaving experiment, a primary ranking system and a secondary ranking system are analyzed to determine whether their respective search results for that search query would be identical. If the search results would be identical, the search query is routed only to the primary ranking system and not the secondary ranking system. If, however, it is determined that the search results would not be identical, both the primary ranking system and the secondary ranking system receive the search query for processing.

Steady Streaming Particle Traps

US Patent:
7803599, Sep 28, 2010
Filed:
Jan 18, 2005
Appl. No.:
11/038454
Inventors:
Barry R. Lutz - Seattle WA, US
Daniel T. Schwartz - Seattle WA, US
Assignee:
University of Washington - Seattle WA
International Classification:
C12N 1/00, B01D 11/04
US Classification:
435243, 210322, 210634
Abstract:
A microfluidic fluid flow system () is disclosed having a fluid chamber or channel () with inlet and outlet ports (), allowing the fluid channel to be filled with a fluid. One or more flow obstructions or perturbances, such as cylinders (), are provided in the channel. An oscillatory boundary condition is applied, for example, with a piezoelectric driver (), that is selected to induce a conservative, low-intensity steady streaming flow in the channel. The low-intensity streaming flow produces distinct eddies that can be utilized, for example, for fluid-dynamically trapping or retaining particles () such as cells () at well defined locations in the channel. The system may be used to trap and study individual cells or for concentrating or filtering particles in a fluid.

Ranking Contextual Signals For Search Personalization

US Patent:
2012023, Sep 20, 2012
Filed:
Mar 14, 2011
Appl. No.:
13/047466
Inventors:
Peter R. BAILEY - Kirkland WA, US
Sebastian De La CHICA - Woodinville WA, US
Aidan CROOK - Bellevue WA, US
Nikhil B. DANDEKAR - Bellevue WA, US
Daniel R. SCHWARTZ - Seattle WA, US
William D. RAMSEY - Redmond WA, US
Nick CRASWELL - Seattle WA, US
Assignee:
MICROSOFT CORPORATION - REDMOND WA
International Classification:
G06F 17/30
US Classification:
707733, 707E17014
Abstract:
Methods are provided for re-ranking documents based on user-specific features. Search results are received from a non-contextual ranking system such that the search results are not specific toward a particular user, such as the user who submitted the search query. Contextual signals are received and provide user-specific features that are used to re-rank documents so that the most important and relevant documents are listed at the top of the list of search results. Each of the user-specific features are evaluated and compared to determine a new position of each document. A set of contextual search results is then generated based on the new positions.
