Additional Design Enhancements For Jam-Tolerant Electromechanical Actuators

US Patent:
2011022, Sep 22, 2011
Filed:
Mar 18, 2011
Appl. No.:
13/052013
Inventors:
Dan T. Nguyen - Irvine CA, US
Bruce W. Behar - Pasadena CA, US
Ted A. Mckay - Foothill Ranch CA, US
International Classification:
F16H 25/24, F16H 25/20
US Classification:
74 8938, 74 8939
Abstract:
Vehicles commonly include control-surfaces and other components that are selectively moved during operation among a plurality of positions. Movement of aircraft control-surface components is crucial in flight, and an actuating assembly must consistently and dependably perform during normal operation and be prepared to survive situations outside normal operation and/or to compensate for circumstances causing loss of actuator control. Jam tolerant electromechanically operated actuation systems, of both the rotary and linear types, together with their methods of operation are described herein. Specifically, electrical jam-detection and control systems and associated locking and damping devices can be electrically and mechanically engaged and disengaged, are automatically reversible, and are testable.

Optical Position Sensing And Method

US Patent:
7275474, Oct 2, 2007
Filed:
May 25, 2006
Appl. No.:
11/440636
Inventors:
Bruce D. Larkin - Plainwell MI, US
Joseph A. Kovach - Aurora OH, US
Matthew H. Simon - Kalamazoo MI, US
Eric B. Chapman - Brea CA, US
Dan T. Nguyen - Irvine CA, US
Assignee:
Parker-HannifinCorporation - Cleveland OH
International Classification:
F01B 31/12, F01B 3/00
US Classification:
92 5R, 92 122, 91 1
Abstract:
In a variable displacement type hydraulic pump/motor assembly including at least one internally movable component, such as a yoke, a swashplate, and the means for moving the swashplate, the improvement includes imparting on this component absolute location indicia markings and the addition of an optical/electronic sensor unit capable of reading such indicia markings fixedly located on a housing of the pump/motor assembly and including an optical read head extending into the housing interior and located at a spaced distance from the indicia markings for reading same, relative to a reference location, and producing a signal indicative of the absolute position of the movable component. The signal can then, in turn, be used for controlling the displacement of the pump/motor assembly. A method for determining the absolute component position is also set forth.

Electromechanical Actuating Assembly

US Patent:
8230750, Jul 31, 2012
Filed:
Feb 26, 2009
Appl. No.:
12/393304
Inventors:
James E. Flatt - Foothill Ranch CA, US
David J. Gurrola - Fillmore CA, US
Bruce W. Behar - Pasadena CA, US
Dan T. Nguyen - Irvine CA, US
Assignee:
Parker-Hannifin Corporation - Cleveland OH
International Classification:
F16H 29/20
US Classification:
74 8938, 74 8939, 74 8928, 74 8929, 244 992
Abstract:
An electromechanical actuating assembly can have a redundant design with a first electric motor providing actuator-moving power via a first drive train and a second electric motor providing actuator-moving power via a second drive train. A first decoupling train can transmit decoupling power to decouple the first drive train from the actuator and a second decoupling train for transmit decoupling power to decouple the second drive train from the actuator. The assembly is operable in a fault-tolerant mode wherein actuator-moving power is transferred only through one drive train and the other drive train is decoupled from the actuator.

Through-Wall Position Sensor

US Patent:
7394244, Jul 1, 2008
Filed:
Oct 22, 2004
Appl. No.:
10/971569
Inventors:
William R. Schley - Rancho Santa Margarita CA, US
Eric B. Chapman - Brea CA, US
Dan Thanh Nguyen - Irvine CA, US
Lawrence P. Flesch - Westminster CA, US
Sandra Lynn Harper - Dana Point CA, US
Curtis Edgar Stevens - Irvine CA, US
Assignee:
Parker-Hannifan Corporation - Cleveland OH
International Classification:
G01B 7/14, G01R 33/069, H01L 43/06
US Classification:
32420724, 3242072
Abstract:
A system and method for measuring the position of at least one field producing element (e. g. , a magnet) without a direct electrical or physical connection between the field producing element and one or more sensors. In one embodiment, the output from an array of sensors (e. g. , Hall Effect sensors) is curve fit using an algorithm having a characteristic bell curve (e. g. , curve fit tracking algorithm, center of gravity algorithm, etc. ) to determine at least one of an absolute or relative position associated with the field producing element and/or a property associated with the field producing element (e. g. , magnetic flux). Another embodiment is directed to detecting errors in one or more of the sensors and excluding the output of the faulty sensors in determining the position associated with the field producing element.
