Series Linkage Auto-Balance Rotor Hub

US Patent:
5970820, Oct 26, 1999
Filed:
Apr 17, 1998
Appl. No.:
9/061992
Inventors:
Damon Carlton Smith - League City TX
Assignee:
Lockheed Martin Corp. - Houston TX
International Classification:
F16C 300, F16F 1522
US Classification:
74573R
Abstract:
A self-contained automatic balancing device or system for use with machines in which a load mass (such as a flywheel or bobbin) is attached to and rotates with a rotating shaft or rotor, and in which the automatic balancing device uses a set of tubes and linkages set in series-connected arrangement for containment of balancing masses within the tubes. The balancing apparatus is situated in mechanical series between the shaft and the rotated mass so that it comprises a hub, is operated into balance by the rotation of the shaft and hub themselves, without need for pneumatic, electric or other energy inputs.

Pneumatically Driven Auto-Balance Rotor Hub

US Patent:
5860865, Jan 19, 1999
Filed:
Apr 19, 1996
Appl. No.:
8/635076
Inventors:
Damon Carlton Smith - League City TX
Assignee:
Lockheed Martin Corporation - Houston TX
International Classification:
F16C 300
US Classification:
464180
Abstract:
A pneumatically operated autobalance arrangement includes a hub which connects a shaft with a driven rotational element. The hub is fitted with a plurality of circumferentially-acting bellows which move weights about the hub. The inflation state of each bellows is determined by an air gap, which varies in dimension depending upon the amount and location of an imbalance of the driven element. The pneumatic pressure can be generated by a turbine driven by the shaft. Force amplification is provided in another embodiment. Autobalance hubs can be stacked axially to provide two-plane dynamic balance.
