Selective Sorbent Removal System Using Polycation Activated Substrates

US Patent:
5416198, May 16, 1995
Filed:
Feb 5, 1993
Appl. No.:
8/013967
Inventors:
Christopher G. Anderson - Salt Lake City UT
James C. McRea - Midvale UT
Assignee:
Research Medical, Inc. - Midvale UT
International Classification:
B01D 6100, B01D 6302, B01D 1508, C07H 100
US Classification:
536111
Abstract:
A polycationic system for the removal of polyanions from a fluid medium is formed by, first, activating a biocompatible hydroxylated support with an organic sulfonyl chloride, such as p-toluene-sulfonyl chloride, in the presence of a dialkylamino pyridine activation catalyst, such as 4-dimethylamino-pyridine (DMAP). The activated support is then reacted with a polymer having a polyamide backbone with pendent alkyl amine groups, such as poly-L-lysine (PLL), to form C--N bonds between an activated carbon from the hydroxylated polymer and an amine group from the polymeric polyamide. Finally, any unreacted activated sites on the hydroxylated polymer are capped or removed with an effective amount of capping agent such as a mercapto (--SH), hydroxy (--OH) or amino (--NH. sub. 2) containing compound which reacts with the unreacted activated sites. The pendent alkyl amines on the polyamide backbone exist, at the appropriate pH, as polycations.

Method For Sterilization Using A Fluid Chemical Biocide

US Patent:
5403549, Apr 4, 1995
Filed:
Nov 4, 1993
Appl. No.:
8/148829
Inventors:
Frank P. McNeil - Salt Lake City UT
Christopher G. Anderson - Salt Lake City UT
Larry A. Gaudioso - Salt Lake City UT
Assignee:
CYCLO.sub.3 PSS Medical Systems, Inc. - Salt Lake City UT
International Classification:
A61L 218
US Classification:
422 29
Abstract:
A method and a composition for disinfecting matter or materials such as medical instruments, operating rooms, examining tables, walls, windows, floors, solutions, porous substances and the like contaminated with bacteria, bacterial spores, fungi, or viruses is disclosed. The composition consists of a mixture of a peroxymonosulfate and a carbonyl-containing compound and reaction products thereof and is preferably dioxirane formed by in situ oxidation of a ketone or aldehyde by the peroxymonosulfate in aqueous solution. Carbonyl-containing compounds that have been tested include acetone, 2-pentanone, 4-hydroxy-4-methyl-2-pentanone, and camphorsulfonic acid. The method includes providing a solution containing the dioxirane reaction mixture and contacting the matter or materials with it at room temperature for a time sufficient to disinfect and sterilize the matter or materials.
