Micro-Actuated Adaptive Diffractive Composites

US Patent:
6975459, Dec 13, 2005
Filed:
Mar 12, 2003
Appl. No.:
10/387026
Inventors:
George Barbastathis - Boston MA, US
Sang-Gook Kim - Wayland MA, US
Wei-Chuan Shih - Cambridge MA, US
Chee Wei Wong - Cambridge MA, US
Yong-Bae Jeon - Lexington MA, US
Assignee:
Massachusetts Institute of Technology - Cambridge MA
International Classification:
G02B005/18
US Classification:
359573, 359569, 359566
Abstract:
A volume diffractive composite is disclosed for providing illumination at a first output angle. The volume diffractive composite comprises a first plurality of grating elements that are mutually spaced from another in a first position with a first spacing period along a first plane, and an actuation unit for changing at least one of the position or the spacing period of the first plurality of grating elements to a second position or spacing period to provide illumination at a second output angle.

Reconfigurable Microphotonics Devices Via Deformable Membrane Platforms

US Patent:
7110628, Sep 19, 2006
Filed:
Jul 14, 2003
Appl. No.:
10/619203
Inventors:
Chee Wei Wong - Cambridge MA, US
George Barbastathis - Boston MA, US
Sang-Gook Kim - Wayland MA, US
Assignee:
Massachusetts Institute of Technology - Cambridge MA
International Classification:
G02B 6/12, G02B 6/10
US Classification:
385 14, 385129
Abstract:
A microphotonic device is provided. The microphotonic device includes a membrane structure that can experience strain. A waveguide element is formed on the membrane structure so that when the membrane structure is strained, the waveguide element elements are tuned to a selective amount.

Dynamically Tunable Photonic Bandgap Microcavity Waveguides Via Mechanical Lattice Control

US Patent:
7092606, Aug 15, 2006
Filed:
Jul 15, 2003
Appl. No.:
10/620072
Inventors:
Chee Wei Wong - Cambridge MA, US
Steven G. Johnson - Cambridge MA, US
George Barbastathis - Boston MA, US
Sang-Gook Kim - Wayland MA, US
Assignee:
Massachusetts Institute of Technology - Cambridge MA
International Classification:
G02B 6/10
US Classification:
385129, 385 5
Abstract:
A photonic bandgap microcavity is provided. The microcavity includes a membrane structure that can experience strain. A photonic bandgap waveguide element is formed on the membrane structure having a defect so that when the membrane structure is strained, the photonic bandgap waveguide element is tuned to a selective amount.
