Filed:
Jul 27, 1993
Appl. No.:
8/907113
Inventors:
Charles A. Smith - Louisville KY
International Classification:
A61M 1600
US Classification:
12820512
Abstract:
A condensation collector for inhalation and exhalation conduits as used for anesthesia or other respiratory support purposes, comprises a container having a top inlet, a condensate collection chamber having a bottom outlet constituting a valve seat which bottom outlet is connected to the container inlet, and a buoyant ball or other valve closure member disposed in the collection chamber and movable between a closed position sealing the valve seat and an open position floating on accumulated condensate above the valve seat. The condensate collection chamber is above the valve closure member in fluid communication with either the inhalation or the exhalation conduits.

Portable Anesthesia Rebreathing System

US Patent:
6536430, Mar 25, 2003
Filed:
Oct 10, 2000
Appl. No.:
09/685399
Inventors:
Charles A. Smith - Louisville KY 40207
International Classification:
A61M 1600
US Classification:
12820418, 12820415, 12820422, 12820328
Abstract:
A portable anesthesia administering system which includes a compact, lightweight unit that does not require a source of electrical power to provide regulated pressurized anesthesia gas to a patient. The operating elements include a disposable carbon dioxide absorber, a charcoal scavenger absorber, an oxygen pressure sensor and alarm for detecting a drop in the oxygen pressure below a pre-selected level. The unit utilizes an anesthesia vaporizer and regulator, an airway pressure limiting valve and airway inlet and outlet control valves to provide a gaseous anesthesia agent in pre-selected amounts. Attached to the disposable carbon dioxide absorber is a manifold block which provides for a plurality of anesthesia regulating and control elements to facilitate the administration of the anesthesia. Connected to the manifold block is an external breathing bag for assisting in the breathing of the patient.

Insulated Conditioned Respiratory Air Transport Tube

US Patent:
5735266, Apr 7, 1998
Filed:
Dec 26, 1995
Appl. No.:
8/578439
Inventors:
Charles A. Smith - Louisville KY
International Classification:
A61M 1600, A62B 700, A62B 906, F24J 300
US Classification:
12820418
Abstract:
The present invention includes a method for preventing heat loss or gain from a conditioned air transport tube in a patient temperature control system thereby reducing internal and/or external vapor condensation commonly associated with such patient temperature control systems while also stabilizing the relative temperature and humidity within such temperature control systems. A thin flexible partially longitudinally compressed casing is provided to surround a corrugated tube of the same or greater thickness to provide an insulating dead air space therebetween. In another arrangement selected enlarged corrugations are provided in spaced relation along the corrugated tube to engage the inner surface of the casing in a preselected spaced arrangement with respect to said corrugated tube to compartmentalize insulating dead air spaces between the tube and the casing.

Single Patient Use Disposable Carbon Dioxide Absorber

US Patent:
5360002, Nov 1, 1994
Filed:
Oct 28, 1991
Appl. No.:
7/818658
Inventors:
Charles A. Smith - Louisville KY
International Classification:
A62B 710, A62B 2302, A62B 1900
US Classification:
12820528
Abstract:
The invention relates to a disposable single patient use device for conditioning air administered to a patient under anesthesia. The apparatus includes an air impervious independently supported container located in immediate proximity to the patient with an inlet and an outlet opening and a mass of granular carbon dioxide absorption material disposed within the container in flow communication with the inlet and outlet openings. The exhalent breath of the patient, laden with carbon dioxide, enters the container and contacts the carbon dioxide absorption material whereupon the carbon dioxide is absorbed with the resultant instantaneous generation of heat and water vapor. The size of the container and the amount of carbon dioxide absorption material is selected such that the normal breathing of the patient causes air to be warmed, humidified, freed of carbon dioxide and recirculated to the patient upon the second and subsequent breaths. The size of the container, the amount of carbon dioxide absorbing material and the location of the container in immediate proximity to the patient also combine to provide a self-regulating feature to the system such that air, at an acceptable humidity and carbon dioxide level and temperature, will be delivered compatible with the patient's breathing rate and tidal volume.

Single Patient Use Disposable Carbon Dioxide Absorber

US Patent:
5228435, Jul 20, 1993
Filed:
May 13, 1991
Appl. No.:
7/699485
Inventors:
Charles A. Smith - Louisville KY
International Classification:
A62B 710, A62B 2302, A61M 1600, F23D 1100
US Classification:
12820512
Abstract:
An efficient, low cost, single-patient-use disposable carbon dioxide absorbing device which avoids use of any moving parts. A transparent flexible sac container having at least two openings for communication between the inside and outside of the container is described. The sac is included within a system for providing air to a patient by means of an airstream through a conduit. The sac includes granular, carbon dioxide absorbing material, an air inflow hose and an air outflow hose. The airstream enters the sac through the inflow hose and is dispersed into the granular material, which absorbs at least a major portion of the carbon dioxide in the airstream. The airstream then enters into the outflow hose and is provided to the patient, thus minimizing the deleterious effects of carbon dioxide in the breathing gas. The construction is of sturdy, lightweight materials minimize the effort and training which would normally be required for replacing a unit which has expended its carbon dioxide absorbing capability.

Insulated Breathing Tube

US Patent:
5623922, Apr 29, 1997
Filed:
Jan 3, 1995
Appl. No.:
8/367733
Inventors:
Charles A. Smith - Louisville KY
International Classification:
A61M 1600, A62B 700, F24J 300
US Classification:
12820418
Abstract:
The present invention includes a method for preventing heat loss from the inhalent gas in a recirculatory aided breathing circuit thereby reducing internal vapor condensation commonly associated with such breathing circuits while also stabilizing the relative temperature and humidity within such breathing circuits. A thin flexible partially longitudinally compressed casing is provided to surround a thicker corrugated tube to provide an insulating dead air space therebetween. In another arrangement selected enlarged corrugations are provided in spaced relation along the corrugated tube to engage the inner surface of the casing in a preselected spaced arrangement with respect to said corrugated tube to compartmentalize insulating dead air spaces between the tube and the casing.
