Process For Optically Storing Information Using Materials Having A Single Phase In Both The Crystalline State And The Amorphous State

US Patent:
4787077, Nov 22, 1988
Filed:
Aug 28, 1987
Appl. No.:
7/090636
Inventors:
Roger W. Barton - Menlo Park CA
Martin Y. Chen - San Jose CA
Charles R. Davis - San Jose CA
Grace L. Gorman - San Jose CA
Vincent Marrello - Morgan Hill CA
Kurt A. Rubin - Santa Clara CA
Assignee:
International Business Machines Corporation - Armonk NY
International Classification:
G11C 1302, G11B 724
US Classification:
369100
Abstract:
An optical storage system has an information containing film of a material which has a crystallization temperature between 100. degree. C. and 400. degree. C. and can be switched between the amorphous and the crystalline states. Both the amorphous and crystalline states are substantially a single phase where the stoichiometric ratio of the material remains unchanged. Spots on the film is heated with a circular laser beam with a controlled pulse duration and intensity to melt the material in the spots. The spots are quenched at one rate to produce the amorphous state, and in a second revolution of the disk, at a different rate to produce the crystalline state.

System And Method For Automatic Storage And Serving Of Digital Content

US Patent:
2008001, Jan 17, 2008
Filed:
Jul 14, 2006
Appl. No.:
11/486715
Inventors:
David MacMillan - Emerald Hills CA, US
Ted Theocheung - San Jose CA, US
Mark Calomeni - San Jose CA, US
Ray Robidoux - San Jose CA, US
Charles Davis - San Jose CA, US
International Classification:
G06F 15/173
US Classification:
709223
Abstract:
A system and method for automatic storage and serving of digital content is disclosed. One aspect of the invention involves a computer-implemented method in which a storage server in a local area network of a user: automatically receives content from a first client device associated with the user, wherein: the received content is determined in accordance with a storage server profile for the storage server, and receiving the content frees up storage space on the first client device; stores at least some of the received content; receives a request for at least some of the stored received content to be served to a second client device associated with the user; and in response to the request for at least some of the stored received content, serves the requested content to the second client device.

US Patent:
7605996, Oct 20, 2009
Filed:
Dec 28, 2007
Appl. No.:
11/965980
Inventors:
Peter Michael Baumgart - San Jose CA, US
Charles Raymond Davis - San Jose CA, US
Gary Allan Herbst - San Jose CA, US
Bernhard E. Knigge - San Jose CA, US
Charles Mathew Mate - San Jose CA, US
Bruce Alexander Wilson - San Jose CA, US
Assignee:
Hitachi Global Storage Technologies Netherlands B.V. - Amsterdam
International Classification:
G11B 21/02, G11B 15/46
US Classification:
360 75, 360 7303
Abstract:
A method according to one embodiment comprises detecting a change in a rotational velocity of a magnetic disk or a spindle coupled to the magnetic disk, the change being caused by head-disk contact. A method for detecting head-disk contact according to another embodiment comprises measuring a rotational velocity of a magnetic disk or a spindle coupled to the magnetic disk; detecting a change in the rotational velocity, the change being caused by head-disk contact; and correlating the change in rotational velocity with the head-disk contact.

System And Method For Generating Disk Failure Warning Using Read Back Signal

US Patent:
2005028, Dec 29, 2005
Filed:
Jun 28, 2004
Appl. No.:
10/878933
Inventors:
Peter Baumgart - San Jose CA, US
Qing Dai - San Jose CA, US
Charles Davis - San Jose CA, US
Bernard Knigge - San Jose CA, US
Assignee:
Hitachi Global Storage Technologies Netherlands B.V. - Amsterdam
International Classification:
G11B027/36, G11B021/20
US Classification:
360031000, 360075000
Abstract:
The read-back signal from a HDD head is demodulated to find the pitch frequency of the head, which can be compared to a baseline value to determine if it has increased, indicating a possible failure due to contamination or lubricants pick up. Or, the pitch frequency can be used during manufacturing of a burnished pad head to determine when burnishing has been completed.
