Seal Rings For The Roller On A Rotary Compressor

US Patent:
5116208, May 26, 1992
Filed:
Aug 20, 1990
Appl. No.:
7/570300
Inventors:
Charles B. Parme - San Diego CA
Assignee:
Sundstrand Corporation - Rockford IL
International Classification:
F04C 18356, F04C 2700, F04C 2902
US Classification:
418 63
Abstract:
A sliding vane rotary pump which includes a housing having disposed therein a cylinder housing, a roller rotatable mounted in a cylindrical opening of the cylinder housing and bearing plates for closing bottom and top ends of the cylindrical opening. The roller includes a cylindrical tube having an internal space wherein each end of the cylindrical tube is provided with a counterbored surface. A seal ring is disposed within the counterbored surface of each end of the cylindrical tube a width of the seal ring extends over the internal space within the cylindrical tube. The internal space is filled with a pressurized fluid supplied by the compressor. The pressurized fluid in the internal space exerts a biasing force on the seal rings to thereby cause the seal rings to move outwardly from the ends of the roller to form a seal with the bearing plates.

Compressor System With Self Contained Lubricant Sump Heater

US Patent:
4995792, Feb 26, 1991
Filed:
Aug 28, 1989
Appl. No.:
7/399261
Inventors:
Paul D. Brown - San Diego CA
William J. Godecker - San Diego CA
Charles B. Parme - San Diego CA
Assignee:
Sundstrand Corporation - Rockford IL
International Classification:
F04B 3902
US Classification:
417366
Abstract:
Decreased lubricity of lubricating oil (36) in a compressor utilized in a vapor compression refrigeration system as well as decreases in thermal efficiency of such a system during start-up are avoided in a compressor structure including a housing (10) containing a compressing mechanism (28), (40) therein, an outlet (34) for the compression mechanism, an inlet (30), (32) for gas to compressed to the compressing mechanism (28), and a sump (24) within the housing (10) for containing the lubricant (36). A conduit (54), (60), (62), (64), (66) is utilized to direct compressed gas from the outlet (34) into heat exchange relation with the lubricant (36) within the sump (24) to drive any refrigerant in solution in the lubricant out of solution so as to improve lubricity and maintain system efficiency.
