Abstract:
A mixture of a self-curing epoxy resin having an equivalent weight of from about 100 to about 700, a melt viscosity of from about 200 to about 2000 centipoise at 150° C. and a low temperature curing agent is extruded as one component at a temperature below 220° F. and the extrudate is cooled and pulverized to form a low temperature curable coating powder. The powder cures at a temperature of from about 225 to about 300° F. and produces a coating having a smooth surface with either a low or high gloss. The powder is particulary useful for coating heat-sensitive substrates such as plastics, paper, cardboard and wood.

Abstract:
Provided are low temperature curing thermosetting epoxy powder coating compositions comprising at least one non-crystalline epoxy resin, at least one crystalline epoxy resin, a curing agent, and a cure catalyst. Coatings made from such powder compositions exhibit a substantial reduction in bubble entrapment, enough to prevent a visible haze from forming in the coating, when cured at low temperatures demanded by brass substrates.

Abstract:
The present invention provides a low temperature curing coating powder composition comprising a mixture of a high gloss film-forming system and a low gloss film-forming system. Preferably, the high gloss film-forming system comprises a GMA (glycidyl methacrylate) resin, a curing agent, and a catalyst and forms a coating having a gloss greater than 80% measured at 60°. Preferably the low gloss film-forming system comprises a carboxyl terminated polyester, acrylic resin and a catalyst and forms a coating having a gloss less than 50% measured at 60°. The composition of the present invention provides coatings having a control gloss, which can range from a low to a high gloss and is useful for coating heat-sensitive substrates.

Abstract:
A method of providing a powder coating to MDF substrate panels wherein, by the differential treatment of the front and back surfaces of these panels, both surfaces can be coated at the same time and the effects of moisture and other volatile outgassing is controlled in such a way as to provide a blemish-free front facing surface with a minimal, but nonetheless acceptable, amount of blemishes on the opposite or back surface. Differential treatment is achieved by preparing each surface using different grades of sand-paper, applying different amounts of curing energy, whether infra-red or thermal, or by applying different thicknesses of coating to each surface.

Abstract:
A melt extrudable low temperature curable powder coating composition for application onto heat sensitive substrates. The final cured coating produces a low gloss finish on the target substrate. The composition consists of an unsaturated polyester resin combined with a glycidyl functional acrylic resin, a crystalline or semi-crystalline polycarboxylic acid or anhydride and a free radical initiator. Optionally, if a harder, more wear-resistant surface is desired, the cure may be catalyzed by either a photoinitiator or a redox compound.
