Orthopedic Pressure Appliance And Method For Controlling Development Of The Maxillary Bone

US Patent:
4337036, Jun 29, 1982
Filed:
Aug 26, 1980
Appl. No.:
6/181632
Inventors:
Carl S. Hoffman - Cheshire CT
International Classification:
A61C 700
US Classification:
433 5
Abstract:
An Orthopedic Pressure Appliance is adapted to be retained in the mouth with resilient wires extending therefrom for attachment to a headcap by elastomeric means for urging the appliance against the maxillary teeth. The upper surface of the appliance has a posteriorly upward sloping flange for engaging the gingival third of the labial surfaces of the anterior teeth and a posteriorly upward sloping surface for supporting the incisive edges of the anterior teeth. The labial-buccal flange tapers downwardly and posteriorly away from the anterior portion thereof to prevent impingement on the gingiva and alveolus. A substantially flat and deep lower surface is provided to avoid entrapment of the mandibular anterior teeth.

Orthodontic Occlusion Prevention System

US Patent:
4480994, Nov 6, 1984
Filed:
Apr 29, 1983
Appl. No.:
6/489871
Inventors:
Carl S. Hoffman - Cheshire CT
International Classification:
A61C 700
US Classification:
433 6
Abstract:
An inter-incisal non-voluntary orthodontic device intended for use in conjunction with overbite corrective braces. The device includes plate of thermoplastic material positioned over selected upper anterior teeth that acts to prevent contact between the selected upper anterior teeth and the opposing lower anterior teeth. The plate by preventing contact between the anterior upper and lower teeth also prevents occlusion between the upper and lower posterior teeth. The plate is anchored to selected upper molars in such a way that the patient cannot easily remove the plate. The plate is connected to selected upper molars, preferably the first molars at sheaths connected to molar jackets used to anchor the patient's braces. Additional anchoring is provided by a ligature through an aperature in the front of the plate and under the brace wire.

US Patent:
4179815, Dec 25, 1979
Filed:
Dec 29, 1977
Appl. No.:
5/865526
Inventors:
Carl S. Hoffman - Cheshire CT
Assignee:
TP Laboratories, Inc. - LaPorte IN
International Classification:
A61C 514
US Classification:
433140
Abstract:
A dental device including a body of plastic material having a plurality of bite block portions and a tongue shield portion for holding a patient's mouth open while restricting movement of the tongue toward the teeth. The bite block portions are adapted to be engaged by the opposing occlusal surfaces of the arches and the tongue shield portion extends between the bite block portions for particularly blocking the tongue from moving toward the lingual surfaces of the teeth.
