Centrifugal Blood Pump Driver Apparatus

US Patent:
5894273, Apr 13, 1999
Filed:
Aug 26, 1996
Appl. No.:
8/702880
Inventors:
James W. Meador - Houston TX
Byron C. Sutherland - Pearland TX
Joseph C. Kearns - Kingwood TX
Assignee:
Fairway Medical Technologies, Inc. - Houston TX
International Classification:
G08B 2100, A61M 3700
US Classification:
340606
Abstract:
A centrifugal blood pump driver comprises a motor housing and the housing contains a motor for rotationally driving the centrifugal blood pump and a controller operatively associated with the motor for controlling the rotational speed of the motor; a speed selector for generating a selected speed signal signifying a selected rotational speed for the motor; sensors operatively associated with the motor or controller for sensing the rotational speed of the motor and outputting a monitor signal signifying such rotational speed; program memory for storage of a program of microprocessor readable instructions; a microprocessor under program control, in electrical connection with the controller, the speed selector, the sensor and the program memory, for receiving the selected speed signal and generating a speed control signal to the controller signifying the selected speed for the controller, and for receiving the monitor signal and outputting a display signal; a display in electrical communication with the microprocessor and responsive to the display signal for displaying information; motor housing circuitry for providing electrical communication among the controller, the speed selector, the sensor, the program memory, the microprocessor, and the display; and electrically conductive cable connected to the motor housing circuitry for transmitting electrical DC power to the motor housing circuitry from an external power source.

Apparatus And Method For Performing Vertical Banded Gastroplasty

US Patent:
5549621, Aug 27, 1996
Filed:
Mar 6, 1995
Appl. No.:
8/399958
Inventors:
Marc Bessler - Teaneck NJ
Max R. Mintz - Houston TX
Byron C. Sutherland - Pearland TX
Assignee:
Conley, Rose & Tayon, P.C. - Houston TX
International Classification:
A61B 1700
US Classification:
606151
Abstract:
The present invention pertains to an apparatus and method which enable the performance of vertical banded gastroplasty (VBG) without the use of staples. Further, a laparoscopic instrument which can be used in combination with the VBG apparatus and method is also disclosed. The laparoscopic instrument can also be used in combination with surgically functional elements other than the VBG apparatus. A particular advantage of the laparoscopic instrument is that surgically functional elements attached at the leading edge of levered jaws of the instrument can be rotated at least 180 degrees in a plane which is substantially parallel to a plane passing horizontally through the longitudinal centerline of the levered jaws.

Seismic Transducer Assembly For Marshy Terrains

US Patent:
3932834, Jan 13, 1976
Filed:
Oct 23, 1973
Appl. No.:
5/408772
Inventors:
Byron C. Sutherland - Pearland TX
Assignee:
Walker-Hall-Sears, Inc. - Houston TX
International Classification:
G01v 116
US Classification:
340 7R
Abstract:
This invention relates to seismic transducer assemblies for converting compressional wave motion or acoustic energy into electric energy in a fluid medium such as is encountered in marshy terrains. It also relates to an improved method of manufacturing such transducers. The transducer includes a rigid hollow casing having a conical end cap to facilitate planting the casing into the ground. At least one pressure transducer element is mounted in the casing. A water-impervious, pressure-transmitting, insulating core fills the casing's cavity. The material rigidly holds the transducer in place and allows transfer of pressure energy from the fluid medium in which the transducer assembly is submerged, to the inner surfaces of the transducer element.

Multi-Contact Connectors With Identical Contacts

US Patent:
4045107, Aug 30, 1977
Filed:
Nov 26, 1976
Appl. No.:
5/759686
Inventors:
Byron Sutherland - Pearland TX
Assignee:
Walker-Hall-Sears, Inc. - Houston TX
International Classification:
H01R 2500
US Classification:
339 48
Abstract:
The electric multi-contact connector comprises a pair of plugs, each carrying a plurality of elongated contact members mounted in spaced-apart relationship on an insulating base. Each contact has an unbiased prong-end for mating with an opposite unbiased prong end, and an opposite terminal-end for connection to an electric conductor. The prong-ends of the contacts of both plugs are preferably substantially identical in shape. The base is preferably made at least in part of a resilient material, or the contacts are otherwise resiliently mounted on the base. When the plugs are moved into mating engagement, each pair of mating prong-ends forms an abutting pressure contact establishing a mechanical and electrical connection between the two conductors connected to the terminal-ends of the engaged pair of contacts.

Coupler For Joining Three Cables

US Patent:
3956575, May 11, 1976
Filed:
Aug 30, 1974
Appl. No.:
5/502254
Inventors:
Byron C. Sutherland - Pearland TX
Assignee:
Walker, Hall, Sears, Inc. - Houston TX
International Classification:
H01R 502, H01R 504, H01R 1358, G01V 116
US Classification:
174 87
Abstract:
A waterproof coupler having a casing and a cap to form a junction box for enclosing a junction between a plurality of electric conductors. The casing has a single opening to enclosingly receive the junction. A plug member constructed of resilient material defines passages therethrough for the conductors. The member is adapted, when compressively urged by the cap into sealing position with the opening, to simultaneously seal the casing and the junction between the conductors. The bare ends of the conductors are anchored by solder balls to a disc positioned inside the casing.
