Samuel Chu Lee - Tucson AZ
Glenn E. Mitchell - Tucson AZ
Assignee:
Envirotest Systems Corp. - Tucson AZ
International Classification:
H04H 300
US Classification:
364514R
Abstract:
An apparatus and method for use at a motor vehicle emission test station, providing wireless communication between a computer and a technician. The computer includes a sound card and voice recognition software, and is housed in a console, having test equipment, video and audio transmitters, and an audio receiver. The technician wears a portable user interface, including a communications pack with a video receiver, an audio receiver, an audio transmitter, and a battery pack. The interface also includes a special helmet, equipped with a video display, a microphone, and headphones. The wireless communications link established by these transmitters, receivers, and interface components enables the technician to carry out testing and inspection procedures on a motor vehicle in a location remote from the computer. Visually and aurally, the computer provides testing and inspection information and procedures to the technician, and the technician orally enters vehicle identification and license plate information, issues commands, and enters test and inspection results in communication with the computer.

Forced Dilution System And Method For Emissions Measurement Systems

US Patent:
5739413, Apr 14, 1998
Filed:
Aug 23, 1996
Appl. No.:
8/701965
Inventors:
Bruce R. Kohn - Tucson AZ
Donald W. Bilsbarrow - Tucson AZ
Pradeep R. Tripathi - Stow OH
Assignee:
Envirotest Systems, Inc. - Sunnyvale CA
International Classification:
G01N 2126
US Classification:
73 2331
Abstract:
The combination of ambient air, exhaust and premeasured calibration gases is used according to this invention in the analysis of either low or high pollutant concentration gases measured by a single range analyzer. By using ambient air as a diluent and employing its concentration values to generate the Reference Dilution Ratio, DR. sub. ref, iterative calculations are made to find the Raw Sample Concentration value, C. sub. raw. The gas diluting/mixing system includes pressure balanced infeed plumbing legs. Each of the legs feeds to respective flow restrictors and a common, downstream mixing "T" fitting. One leg is interconnected to the high concentration emission gas output from the sampling system and high concentration calibration gas. The other leg is interconnected to the diluent gas source, ambient air.

Vehicle Waiting Time Indicator

US Patent:
5163000, Nov 10, 1992
Filed:
Oct 19, 1990
Appl. No.:
7/600336
Inventors:
John N. Rogers - Tucson AZ
Bruce R. Kohn - Tucson AZ
Rodney T. Boorse - Tucson AZ
International Classification:
G06F 1520, G06F 1521, G06F 1548
US Classification:
36442401
Abstract:
A plurality of vehicle service stations are located in a geographical area, each station includes one or more service bays in which the vehicle is serviced, each bay has an associated lane in which one or more vehicles wait their turn to be serviced in the bay, each lane has one or more sensors for sensing the presence of vehicles in the lane. Each station has a computer which is responsive to the lane sensors for computing the waiting time at the station for a vehicle, the waiting time for each station is displayed on a visual display at the station, the waiting time from each station is also communicated to a host computer centrally located with the geographical region. The host computer has an associated phone messaging system which is responsive to phone calls made from phones in the geographical area, the host computer calculates a recommended station to proceed to and provides a digitized voice of this recommendation through the phone messaging system to a potential customer calling the messaging system over the phone.

Method And Apparatus For Testing Vehicle Fuel System Integrity

US Patent:
7347082, Mar 25, 2008
Filed:
Feb 28, 2005
Appl. No.:
11/068288
Inventors:
Bruce R Kohn - Tucson AZ, US
Assignee:
SysTech International, LLC - Ann Arbor MI
International Classification:
G01M 3/26
US Classification:
73 40, 73 492, 73 497
Abstract:
A method and apparatus for measuring leakage of a vehicle fuel system includes providing an apparatus having a gas source, a pressure meter and a reference orifice and connecting the apparatus to the fuel system. The fuel system is pressurized with the source. A first set of pressure measurements is obtained using the pressure meter with gas escaping the fuel system through leakage of the fuel system. A second set of pressure measurements is obtained with gas escaping the fuel system through leakage of the fuel system and through the reference orifice. An effect of fuel vapor pressure created by fuel in the vehicle fuel system may be measured. A leakage parameter of the fuel system may be calculated from the first and second sets of pressure measurements including compensating for the effect of fuel vapor pressure.

Vehicle Communication System And Method With Mobile Data Collection

US Patent:
7596435, Sep 29, 2009
Filed:
Aug 3, 2006
Appl. No.:
11/462118
Inventors:
Pradeep R. Tripathi - Miami Beach FL, US
Bruce R. Kohn - Tucson AZ, US
Assignee:
SysTech International, LLC - Murray UT
International Classification:
G01M 17/00
US Classification:
701 29, 701 30
Abstract:
A vehicle communication system and method of communicating data from a vehicle, such as for inspecting or diagnosing a vehicle, includes providing a plurality of vehicle units each including a vehicle wireless communication transceiver and a memory. Data, such as vehicle data from a vehicle diagnostic system, is stored in the memory. A communication system is provided for two-way wireless communication with the vehicle units. The communication system is made up of one or more mobile wireless communication transceivers. Vehicle data is communicated from the memory to one of the mobile wireless communication transceivers that is in the vicinity of that vehicle unit. The transporting of the mobile wireless communication transceiver increases interaction between the communication system and the vehicle units.

Fraud Detection In An Obd Inspection System

US Patent:
2013002, Jan 24, 2013
Filed:
May 29, 2012
Appl. No.:
13/482355
Inventors:
Lothar Geilen - Coral Springs FL, US
Bruce R. Kohn - Tucson AZ, US
Eugene J. Tierney - Honolulu HI, US
Assignee:
SysTech International, LLC - Murray UT
International Classification:
G01M 17/00
US Classification:
701 296, 701 314, 701 298
Abstract:
A vehicle testing system and method includes a vehicle testing system that is operatively connected with a vehicle computer whereby the system is able to evaluate signals within the vehicle computer. The system includes a tamper testing sequence for detecting vehicle tampering comprising applying a test action to the vehicle intended to generate a signal in the vehicle computer responsive to the test action, monitoring the signal of the vehicle computer associated with the test action, and determining whether the signal meets an expected response. A determination that the signal of the vehicle computer associated with the test action does not meet the expected response indicates that tampering has occurred.
