Abstract:
A computer-based system and method facilitate placing virtual orthodontic brackets with respect to a virtual model of a set of teeth. The teeth are displayed for the user, who places reference points, lines, or other reference features on the depiction, such as interproximal contact points, cusp tip points, tangent lines that define facio-lingual angles, etc. The system then computes a position of the virtual model with respect to a reference system of three mutually perpendicular (X, Y and Z) axes from the reference points, lines or other reference features. The brackets can then be positioned in accordance with the reference system. The system generates data representing the positions of the brackets with respect to the virtual model. That data can be output in the form of a data file. In addition, that data can be used to generate a data file representing a virtual model of a transfer tray conforming to the set of teeth. The transfer tray data file can then be used as input to a rapid prototyping machine to enable the machine to make a real transfer tray. A transfer tray made in this manner has voids with slot-like portions in which the real (non-virtual) brackets are to be received so that the brackets can be transferred to the patient's mouth and adhered to the teeth.

The bracket can be embedded into or encapsulated by an adhesive that is bonded to the tooth. A clip is provided for holding the bracket in position and occluding the opening while the adhesive is applied. And indirect methods of attaching the brackets to teeth are provided wherein the brackets can be attached to the lingual side of the teeth in a low-profile arrangement. A first method includes the step of positioning the brackets on a physical model of the teeth by using a positioning machine. A second method includes the step of positioning virtual brackets on a virtual model of the teeth using software, then generating a physical transfer try using rapid prototyping.

A device for positioning orthodontic brackets on lingual and/or facial surfaces of mal-occluded teeth. The positioning device has a base and a superstructure with an adjustable platform for mounting a model of a patient's teeth and a free-floating composite register assembly. The composite register assembly includes a vertical register assembly, a torque register assembly, a rotation register assembly, and a bracket holder assembly, which are all adjustable for precise positioning of the brackets on the teeth. A method of positioning orthodontic brackets on lingual and/or facial surfaces of teeth includes registering the existing position of the mal-occluded teeth and positioning the brackets so that after the orthodontic treatment is complete the brackets are aligned in an ideal arch.
