Method And Apparatus For The Interim Storage Of Medicated Oral Dosage Forms

US Patent:
6173851, Jan 16, 2001
Filed:
Mar 18, 1999
Appl. No.:
9/271764
Inventors:
Brian Hague - Salt Lake City UT
Steve Shoemaker - Salt Lake City UT
Assignee:
Anesta Corporation - Salt Lake City UT
International Classification:
B65D 5000, A61J 700
US Classification:
215201
Abstract:
An apparatus for the reusable interim storage of partially consumed medicated oral dosage forms and methods for employing such an apparatus in order to use medicated oral dosage forms in the safest possible manner. The apparatus of the present invention in its broadest terms comprises (1) a container sized to hold a medicated oral dosage form, (2) means for allowing a medicated oral dosage form easy access into the container but substantially preventing the medicated oral dosage form from passing out of the container, and (3) a child resistant means for allowing an adult to remove a medicated oral dosage form from within the container despite the one-way access means. The preferred embodiment comprises an opaque container having one opening, a child resistant closure with an aperture there through that extends over said opening, and a plastic slitted membrane covering said aperture. The method of the present invention comprises providing a patient with the apparatus of the present invention, administering to the patient a medicated oral dosage form, and when the patient has received sufficient medication, inserting the partially consumed medicated oral dosage form into the apparatus via the one-way access means.

Compositions And Methods Of Manufacture Of Compressed Powder Medicaments

US Patent:
4863737, Sep 5, 1989
Filed:
Jun 8, 1987
Appl. No.:
7/060045
Inventors:
Theodore H. Stanley - Salt Lake City UT
Brian Hague - West Valley UT
Assignee:
University of Utah - Salt Lake City UT
International Classification:
A61K 968
US Classification:
424440
Abstract:
Compositions and methods of manufacture for producing a medicament composition capable of absorption through the mucosal tissues of the mouth, pharynx, and esophagus. The present invention relates to such compositions and methods which are useful in administering drugs in a dose-to-effect manner such that sufficient drug is administered to produce precisely a desired effect. The invention also relates to a manufacturing technique that enables a therapeutic agent or drug to be incorporated into a flavored confectionary base and to compress or otherwise attach the solid confectionary mixture onto an appliance or holder. Employing the present invention, the drug may be introduced into the patient's bloodstream almost as fast as through injection, and much faster than using the oral administration route, while avoiding the negative aspects of both of these methods. The present invention achieves these advantages by incorporating the drug into a compressed powder "candy " matrix. The pH and pKa of the powder matrix can be modified to increase the absorption of the drug through the mucosal tissues.

Methods And Compositions For Noninvasive Dose-To-Effect Administration Of Drugs With Cardiovascular Or Renal Vascular Activities

US Patent:
5484602, Jan 16, 1996
Filed:
Jan 20, 1995
Appl. No.:
8/376642
Inventors:
Theodore H. Stanley - Salt Lake City UT
Brian Hague - West Valley City UT
Assignee:
University of Utah Research Foundation - Salt Lake City UT
International Classification:
A61K 968
US Classification:
424440
Abstract:
The present invention is directed to methods and compositions for noninvasively administering drugs in a dose-to-effect manner to produce a cardiovascular or renal vascular activity. A cardiovascular or renal vascular drug, which is capable of absorption through mucosal tissues of the mouth, pharnyx, and esophagus is incorporated into a matrix which is in the form of a lollipop. A patient is put at ease when given the lollipop, and the drug rapidly enters the patient's bloodstream as the lollipop is sucked. When treating the patient, the physician can observe the patient's condition and remove the lollipop when it has had a desired effect on the patient. A lollipop into which a cardiovascular or renal vascular drug has been dispersed is particularly useful for achieving rapid vasodilating, calcium channel blocking, beta-blocking, seritonin receptor blocking, angina blocking, antihypertensive, and cardiac stimulating effects and for controlling urine output.

Abstract:
Compositions and methods of manufacture for producing a medicament composition capable of absorption through the mucosal tissues of the mouth, pharynx, and esophagus. The present invention relates to such compositions and methods which are useful in administering lipophilic and nonlipophilic drugs in a dose-to-effect manner such that sufficient drug is administered to produce precisely a desired effect. The invention also relates to a manufacturing technique that enables a therapeutic agent or drug to be incorporated into a flavored dissolvable matrix. An appliance or holder is preferably attached to the dissolvable matrix. Employing the present invention the drug may be introduced into the patient's bloodstream almost as fast as through injection, and much faster than using the oral administration route, while avoiding the negative aspects of both of these methods. The present invention achieves these advantages by incorporating the drug into a carbohydrate, fat, protein, wax, or other dissolvable matrix composition. The dissolvable matrix may include permeation enhancers to increase the drug absorption by the mucosal tissues of the mouth.

Selectively Removable Nicotine-Containing Dosage Form For Use In The Transmucosal Delivery Of Nicotine

US Patent:
5783207, Jul 21, 1998
Filed:
Feb 4, 1997
Appl. No.:
8/795359
Inventors:
Theodore H. Stanley - Salt Lake City UT
Brian Hague - West Valley City UT
Assignee:
University of Utah Research Foundation - Salt Lake City UT
International Classification:
A61K 968, A61K 31465
US Classification:
424440
Abstract:
The present invention relates to a selectively removable nicotine-containing dosage form for use in the transmucosal delivery of nicotine to a patient. More specifically, the present invention is directed to a nicotine-containing dosage-form comprising an attached holder member which may be used to manipulate the dosage form within the mouth of the patient as part of an effective smoking cessation program or in situations where smoking is undesirable or not permitted. Nicotine is released from a dosage form and absorbed through the intra-oral mucosal surfaces as the nicotine-containing matrix releases nicotine within the user's mouth. The user may selectively insert and remove the dosage form as desired to control the release of nicotine. In addition, the user may manipulate the dosage form by use of the holder means in such a manner to meet the user's psychological need or desire for ritualistic oral stimulation similar to cigarette smoking.
