Regulating Transmission Fluid And Engine Coolant Temperatures In A Motor Vehicle

US Patent:
2009010, Apr 23, 2009
Filed:
Oct 23, 2007
Appl. No.:
11/876834
Inventors:
James T. Gooden - Canton MI, US
Brian D. Bishop - Ira Township MI, US
Gregory D. Gardner - Livonia MI, US
International Classification:
F28D 15/00
US Classification:
16510419
Abstract:
A system for controlling the temperature of a transmission fluid includes a first heat exchanger communicating with a source of engine coolant for transferring heat between the engine coolant and the transmission fluid and including a first outlet through which transmission fluid exits the first heat exchanger, a second heat exchanger through which air may flow for transferring heat between the transmission fluid and the air and including a second inlet through which transmission fluid enters the second heat exchanger, and second outlet through which transmission fluid exits the second heat exchanger, and a first bypass valve for alternately opening and closing the second inlet and the second outlet when a temperature of transmission fluid exiting the first outlet is greater than a first reference temperature, and for bypassing the second heat exchanger when the temperature of transmission fluid exiting the first outlet is less than the second reference temperature.

Supplying Lubricant To A Pinion Carrier Of An Automatic Transmission

US Patent:
2006028, Dec 21, 2006
Filed:
Jun 21, 2005
Appl. No.:
11/157235
Inventors:
Brian Bishop - Ira Township MI, US
Michael Brockway - Pinckney MI, US
Mohamed Redissi - Ann Arbor MI, US
Norm Bird - Plymouth MI, US
Jim Gooden - Canton MI, US
Robert Meyer - Canton MI, US
International Classification:
F16H 57/04, F16H 57/08
US Classification:
475159000, 475331000
Abstract:
An assembly for a hydraulically actuated automatic transmission comprising a balance dam, a carrier partially enclosing the balance dam, and a pinion shaft secured to the carrier having a fluid passage interconnecting the balance dam and an outer surface of the pinion shaft. Fluid exiting the passage is used to lubricate a bearing supported on the pinion shaft.

Dual Area Piston For Transmission Clutch And Sequential Control Therefor

US Patent:
7104380, Sep 12, 2006
Filed:
Sep 15, 2004
Appl. No.:
10/942071
Inventors:
Brian Bishop - Ira Township MI, US
Pete Bezjak - Dearborn MI, US
Karl Jungbluth - Orchard Lake MI, US
Assignee:
Ford Global Technologies, LLC - Dearborn MI
International Classification:
F16D 25/638, F16D 25/12
US Classification:
192 85AA, 192 85 R, 192109 F
Abstract:
A system for actuating a clutch that alternately driveably connects and disconnects components, includes a clutch having a piston that includes a first apply area and a second apply area, a fluid pressure source, a source of variable control pressure, and a control coupled with the fluid pressure source and operative in response to the control pressure to engage the clutch initially by increasing pressure steadily at the first apply area up to a first magnitude followed by a rapid increase in pressure at the first apply area and the second apply area above the first magnitude to a second magnitude.
