Systems And Methods For Powering A Network Access Device Using Customer Premises Equipment

US Patent:
2012030, Nov 29, 2012
Filed:
May 27, 2011
Appl. No.:
13/117918
Inventors:
Brian Smith - Madison AL, US
Daniel M. Joffe - Owns Crossroads AL, US
International Classification:
H04B 1/38
US Classification:
375219
Abstract:
A system in accordance with an exemplary embodiment of the present disclosure comprises an NAD positioned at an intermediate point between a network facility and one or more customer premises (CP). The NAD is coupled to CP transceivers located at the one or more customer premises via a plurality of subscriber lines. The CP transceivers are configured to provide power to and also communicate with the NAD via the subscriber lines. The NAD is further configured to form a power signal based on the power received from multiple subscriber lines and to provide the power signal to components of the NAD. The NAD is further configured to determine from which of the subscriber lines it is receiving at least a certain amount of power and to selectively enable and disable the communication service provided over each respective subscriber line based on such determination. The NAD also powers down at least some components of the NAD that were used to previously provide the services that have since been disabled.

Optical Network Unit With Redundant Reverse Powering From Customer Premises Equipment

US Patent:
8601289, Dec 3, 2013
Filed:
Feb 21, 2011
Appl. No.:
13/031323
Inventors:
Brian C. Smith - Madison AL, US
Steven M. Robinson - Madison AL, US
Daniel M. Joffe - Owens Crossroads AL, US
Assignee:
Adtran, Inc. - Huntsville AL
International Classification:
G06F 1/26
US Classification:
713300, 713340
Abstract:
In accordance with a non-limiting example, an optical communications system includes a plurality of Customer Premises Equipment (CPE), each having a reverse power supply circuit and each connected to a wire pair and configured to transmit and receive data and provide reverse power over the wire pair. An Optical Network Unit (ONU) includes a plurality of communication boards. A respective communication port is connected to a selected wire pair and its associated CPE through which data is transmitted and received and power received therefrom. A power management circuit is connected to each of the communication ports and configured to receive power and provide power sharing and manage power consumption and power supply redundancy from the plurality of CPE through the communication ports.

Smart Breaker And Related System And Method For Protecting Electrical Devices From Fault Conditions

US Patent:
8564920, Oct 22, 2013
Filed:
Jul 22, 2010
Appl. No.:
12/841198
Inventors:
Brian Christian Smith - Madison AL, US
Randall Johnston - Fayetteville TN, US
Assignee:
Adtran, Inc. - Huntsville AL
International Classification:
H02H 3/08
US Classification:
361 931, 361 932
Abstract:
A smart breaker includes a current detector configured to detect current flow from a power source to a protected device. A controller has logic and is configured to select a trip value in response to the detected current flow and stored configuration information relating to the protected device. The protected device includes at least one installed component requiring power and the stored configuration information can be at least one of data regarding the number of installed components in the protected device requiring power, the amount of power used by each of the installed components, and the expected power requirements of the installed components.

Reversible Fan Module For Electronic Enclosures

US Patent:
8385064, Feb 26, 2013
Filed:
Dec 7, 2010
Appl. No.:
12/961574
Inventors:
Brian C. Smith - Madison AL, US
Jacob D. McCleary - Harvest AL, US
Assignee:
Adtran, Inc. - Huntsville AL
International Classification:
H05K 7/20
US Classification:
361695, 36167948, 361690, 361694, 454184
Abstract:
An enclosure for electronics includes a chassis and an interface connector positioned within the chassis and configured to provide power. A fan shelf module is received within the chassis and has at least one fan to provide air flow through the chassis. The fan shelf module includes a pinout connector along a horizontal or vertical line of symmetry and configured to engage the interface connector and receive power therefrom, such that the fan shelf module is selectively installed in one of two opposing directions allowing a fan air flow direction to the chassis to be selected as either pulling air or pushing air through the chassis depending on the installed direction of the fan shelf module.

Dual Level Surge Protector Circuit For Telecommunication Line

US Patent:
8649149, Feb 11, 2014
Filed:
Mar 7, 2011
Appl. No.:
13/041470
Inventors:
Brian C. Smith - Madison AL, US
Daniel M. Joffe - Owens Crossroads AL, US
Assignee:
Adtran, Inc. - Huntsville AL
International Classification:
H02H 1/04
US Classification:
361119
Abstract:
In accordance with a non-limiting example, a dual level surge protector adaptively selects the protection level required in response to any expected voltages that will be applied to the tip and ring lines. In one example, the surge protector has a first set value for responding to an applied battery voltage and a second set value for responding to a combination voltage that includes a battery voltage plus a ringing voltage.
