Underground Barrier Construction Apparatus With Soil-Retaining Shield

Underground Barrier Construction Apparatus With Soil-Retaining Shield

US Patent:
5788422, Aug 4, 1998
Filed:
Oct 4, 1996
Appl. No.:
8/725448
Inventors:
Bradley M. Gardner - Idaho Falls ID
Ann Marie Smith - Pocatello ID
Richard W. Hanson - Spokane WA
Richard T. Hodges - Deer Park WA
Assignee:
Lockheed Martin Idaho Technologies Company - Idaho Falls ID
International Classification:
E02D 312, E02D 518, E02F 506
US Classification:
405267
Abstract:
An apparatus for building a horizontal underground barrier by cutting through soil and depositing a slurry, preferably one which cures into a hardened material. The apparatus includes a digging means for cutting and removing soil to create a void under the surface of the ground, a shield means for maintaining the void, and injection means for inserting barrier-forming material into the void. In one embodiment, the digging means is a continuous cutting chain. Mounted on the continuous cutting chain are cutter teeth for cutting through soil and discharge paddles for removing the loosened soil. This invention includes a barrier placement machine, a method for building an underground horizontal containment barrier using the barrier placement machine, and the underground containment system. Preferably the underground containment barrier goes underneath and around the site to be contained in a bathtub-type containment.

Sensor System For Buried Waste Containment Sites

Sensor System For Buried Waste Containment Sites

US Patent:
6648552, Nov 18, 2003
Filed:
Oct 14, 1999
Appl. No.:
09/418681
Inventors:
Ann Marie Smith - Pocatello ID
Bradley M. Gardner - Idaho Falls ID
Kevin M. Kostelnik - Idaho Falls ID
Judy K. Partin - Idaho Falls ID
Gregory D. Lancaster - Idaho Falls ID
Mary Catherine Pfeifer - San Antonio NM
Assignee:
Bechtel BWXT Idaho, LLC - Idaho Falls ID
International Classification:
G21F 900
US Classification:
40512955, 4051295
Abstract:
A sensor system for a buried waste containment site having a bottom wall barrier and sidewall barriers, for containing hazardous waste. The sensor system includes one or more sensor devices disposed in one or more of the barriers for detecting a physical parameter either of the barrier itself or of the physical condition of the surrounding soils and buried waste, and for producing a signal representing the physical parameter detected. Also included is a signal processor for receiving signals produced by the sensor device and for developing information identifying the physical parameter detected, either for sounding an alarm, displaying a graphic representation of a physical parameter detected on a viewing screen and/or a hard copy printout. The sensor devices may be deployed in or adjacent the barriers at the same time the barriers are deployed and may be adapted to detect strain or cracking in the barriers, leakage of radiation through the barriers, the presence and leaking through the barriers of volatile organic compounds, or similar physical conditions.

Methods And System For Subsurface Stabilization Using Jet Grouting

Methods And System For Subsurface Stabilization Using Jet Grouting

US Patent:
5980446, Nov 9, 1999
Filed:
Aug 12, 1997
Appl. No.:
8/910098
Inventors:
Guy G. Loomis - Idaho Falls ID
Jerry R. Weidner - Iona ID
Richard K. Farnsworth - Idaho Falls ID
Bradley M. Gardner - Idaho Falls ID
James J. Jessmore - Idaho Falls ID
Assignee:
Lockheed Martin Idaho Technologies Company - Idaho Falls ID
International Classification:
A62D 300, B09B 300
US Classification:
588250
Abstract:
Methods and systems are provided for stabilizing a subsurface area such as a buried waste pit for either long term storage, or interim storage and retrieval. A plurality of holes are drilled into the subsurface area with a high pressure drilling system provided with a drill stem having jet grouting nozzles. A grouting material is injected at high pressure through the jet grouting nozzles into a formed hole while the drill stem is withdrawn from the hole at a predetermined rate of rotation and translation. A grout-filled column is thereby formed with minimal grout returns, which when overlapped with other adjacent grout-filled columns encapsulates and binds the entire waste pit area to form a subsurface agglomeration or monolith of grout, soil, and waste. The formed monolith stabilizes the buried waste site against subsidence while simultaneously providing a barrier against contaminate migration. The stabilized monolith can be left permanently in place or can be retrieved if desired by using appropriate excavation equipment.
