Abstract:
The present invention relates to a device for use in a fiber optic system that may be a communication system, a sensing system or other system using guided-wave optical components. Reducing the number of lenses required to couple the waveguides and the free-space paths in the device offers the dual advantages of a reduced component count and simplified alignment. In an exemplary device having a first and second waveguides, a birefringent optical system defines bi-directional, polarization-dependent free-space paths. One of the bidirectional, polarization-dependent, free-space paths couples at least the first waveguide to the second waveguide. The birefringent optical system includes at least one prism for bending one of the polarization-dependent paths in a clockwise direction and one of the polarization-dependent paths in a counterclockwise direction.

Limited Rotation Fiber Optic Rotary Joint

US Patent:
2013017, Jul 11, 2013
Filed:
Jan 11, 2012
Appl. No.:
13/348045
Inventors:
Boying B. ZHANG - Lawrenceville NJ, US
Hong ZHANG - North Brunswick NJ, US
Louis D. VIOLANTE - Monroe Township NJ, US
International Classification:
G02B 6/26
US Classification:
385 26
Abstract:
The present invention is a limited rotation Fiber Optic Rotary Joint (FORJ) of one or more optical channels. This will enable one or more optical signals to pass across a rotational interface for a fixed number of rotations. For many applications, such as a winch or certain robotic joints, an unlimited number of rotations in either direction is unnecessary. For these types of applications a limited rotation FORJ is an attractive option because they typically have lower loss, are less complex, and have higher reliability.

Off-Axis Fiber Optic Slip Ring

US Patent:
7792400, Sep 7, 2010
Filed:
May 11, 2006
Appl. No.:
11/443415
Inventors:
Hong Zhang - Plainsboro NJ, US
Boying B. Zhang - Lawrenceville NJ, US
Assignee:
Princetel Inc. - Pennington NJ
International Classification:
G02B 6/26
US Classification:
385 26, 385 25
Abstract:
A multi-channel off-axis optic slip ring system is disclosed. The invention eliminates the huge number of fiber bundles and photodiodes in most published patents. A couple of conventional optical components such as mirrors and prisms are used to transmit optical signals with high quality and low optic losses. The optical signal pick-up is realized through a pair of prisms mounted on gear transmission systems. It is a true passive, bi-directional rotational optical transmission device which could be used for both multi-mode and single mode fibers without the limitation to the through bore diameters.

Inventors:
Boying B. Zhang - Lawrenceville NJ, US
Hong Zhang - Plainsboro NJ, US
Assignee:
PRINCETEL, INC. - Pennington NJ
International Classification:
G02B 6/26
US Classification:

Abstract:
A fiber optic rotary coupler is invented using both single mode and multi-mode optic fibers. This device has a rotatable optic fiber and a stationary optic fiber in an assembly to convey a light beam in the optic fibers. The assembly also includes a stationary fiber holder for fixing the tip of stationary optic fiber in a central hole and a rotatable fiber holder for fixing the body of the rotatable optic fiber with the tip of the rotatable fiber protruding out of the rotatable fiber holder. The two fiber holders can be rotated relatively each other so as to allow the tip of rotatable optic fiber to rotate in the central hole on the stationary fiber holder with the tips of the two optic fibers adjacent very closely.

International Classification:
G02B 6/26, H01R 39/00
US Classification:
385 25, 439 1
Abstract:
The object of the present invention is that of a slip ring which utilizes one or more pistons to transfer the external pressure applied by the environment to an incompressible fluid in the inner cavity of the slip ring, thereby balancing the external and internal pressures resulting in a nominal, if any, pressure differential. This will enable the device to operated in environments with significantly higher ambient pressures then have been traditionally possible.

Inventors:
Zhicheng Yang - Burnsville MN, US
Qi Wang - Burnsville MN, US
Boying Zhang - Lawrenceville NJ, US
Assignee:
ADC Telecommunications, Inc. - Eden Prairie MN
International Classification:
H04J014/02
US Classification:
359/130000, 359/124000
